New Philips (vad6035/21) Not Reading Cd-r...
« on: February 15, 2005, 03:38:00 AM »

I have a 1.6 xbox with a new philips (vad6035/21) mfg. august 2004.

It doesn't read any cd-r and has troubles reading dvd+rw. When de xbox is getting temperatures over 60 degrees celcius it read's the dvd+rw without any trouble...

I have tried many different brands of cd-r's, but no luck... :(

It reads dvd+/- r without any troubles...

I opened the dvd drive up and got readings of 791 ohm from the left pot and 821 ohms from the right. I then tried to "heat" the dvd drive using a "hot-air gun" for a short time, and could see that the values had dropped on both of the pots...

I've seen a guide for the old philips drive, but not for the new one as they are supposed to read everything from the box... How much should I decrease the values on the pots in the new philips drive?

As I understand, most drives don't read CD-R's at all.  But, I also have a new Philips drive (2004 MD) in a 1.6 and it reads Memorex 52x speed CD-R's just fine to my surprise...  (haven't tried others)  I watched a DivX movie I had burned on it and was able to FF / RW just fine and then copy the DivX to the hard drive without a problem.

Hope this helps...

Phillips doesnt read every brand cd-r or dvd+r. It's not like the old Samsung which would read any crappy cd-r media. It's just luck of the draw with phillips drives. I still prefer Samsung drives.

Update:

I turned down the left pot from around 790 to 640 ohms.... and guess what.

Instead of starting to read my dvd+rw's at 60 degrees it now starts to read them at 42 degrees, and it's the same every time I try.... Strange that temperature has such a big influence...

So if I want to read my dvd+rw's I just start the xbox a couple of minutes before, and there is no problem... My xbox quiclky goes to around 55 degrees...

I'll see what manufacturers I have tried on the cd-r's, and will post on my finding.

BTW, an "original" audio cd from chinatown in Kuala Lumpur, also had the same temp. problem and it reads it fine now. Still no luck with my cd-r's... <
