Dvd Drive Causing Problems
« on: February 08, 2005, 09:04:00 PM »

hello, i have dual wd 250gig hd's internally, and i took the dvd out and have it as a detachable external dvd drive.

in the past month or two i had bios reboot problems, and had to reflash the eeprom because the dvd/video settings got changed?(i think i was told it happened with xbmp) the main change i could see in configmagic was the dvd kit zone changed from "0" to a "1"

it worked for about a week, then i started getting "12 service required. call customer support" and 7 other languages saying the same thing. i figured out that this happened when the dvd wasn't plugged in. about every 1 in 20 times i can get evox to boot when the dvd is attached. the rest of the time when the dvd is attached i get a bios reboot(even with m7 with an embeded eeprom). and every time the dvd is not attached i get the error12 in 8 languages(7 + english).
i found this on the main page faq's 12 - kernel - DVD parameters (PIO/DMA) this error is attributed to the dvd drives ability to send and recieve data either replace the dvd drives logic board or get a new one.

what to do? i'm planning on putting the dvd back inside and turning the two hd's sideways(like most are doing now) but i need to solve this problem <

oh yeah, i've got a v1.1 xecuter 2.3b pro chip

i have the original phillips dvd and i bought a "new" thompson off ebay and both have the same results. i've tried swapping every wire(ide, yellow dvd)

i'm willing to buy whatever to get this thing running. should i look into a new chip, or a new mb?

is there something i can solder and "patch" something so it will overide whatever is causing this?

ok, so i searched here and google for: dvd (short, shorting out) xbox reboot "error 12"

and found nothing helpful, usually nothing. i guess i'll pull my mb out of the rats nest on top of it and check the bottom of the mb for.......something.

any ideas? even if you just have an idea of what to search for <

My friend had the same problem with a softmodded 1.6 (UDE2). With the Sammy 605f that came with it ,the xbox works fine.

But, when I plug in 2 different sammy 605b drives (I confirmed that both of them work fine on another xbox), or a 616t (I modded it myself, confirmed that it works), it boots to error 12. Put the orig 605f back in, it works fine.

This has really been stumping me; the drives work perfectly in other xboxes, and the 1.6 works fine with its original 605f. <

so it's the dvd drive?  it happens with the original phillips and the new thompson i just bought. and without the dvd it gets stuck in a reboot loop.

what is the quick way i can fix this? buy another dvd drive? will it happen to the new dvd drive? would a new motherboard fix the problem permanently?

thanks <

I really dont know, the problem has me stumped too.

If you can get a hold of another xbox, you can test the drives in another box and see if they make that xbox have error 12. If it does, then the prob. is the dvd drive. If they work, then the problem is elsewhere.

^^^ That's about how far Ive gotten with my problem, I know the drives are good, but im unsure if its the 1.6's mobo, the HDD, or a bios/eeprom thing. <

do you have a thread somewhere? or did you find a tutorial to fix it somewhere? i could use a link. i think i'm just gonna turn this into a stock xbox(maybe for xbl) if i can find the original hd and get it running with that, and just get another mb/dvd <

ok, since we can't edit, i'll post my findings.

after buying a new mb/dvd/chip/hd i found the problem was my evox(slayers 2.5) something in it caused the problem, i upgraded to the new slayers and the problem went away.

so if you have this problem do not buy another xbox/chip like i did, try upgrading your evox(if you're using evox) <
