Pc-dvd Drive Replacement Quick Question

Alright, I've been reading up on it, and I've read that if you replace your DVD drive on the XBox, it will no longer play originals. Now, does that mean it can read them, but not play them, or not read them period?
I'm pretty sure it's the latter, but I hope someone proves my assumption to be wrong. =-)
