Check your HUB/Switch and cables.  Sometimes you can have a bad cable and it can cause a lot of problems.  Same goes for the HUB/SWITCH.

Also if you're using more than one HUB/SWITCH try to plug both the PC and XBOX in the same one.

Lastly, try a different FTP program, use PORT mode (Active FTP).

Hope this helps!

still no luck, the xbox crashes after a few bytes of transfer to and from the xbox.

I did manage to copy the original dashboard to my PC.

I can ping the xbox but I can't connect.   After this I have to reboot the xbox to reconnect.

The xbox is known to fuck up after a failed transfer, or cancelled or whatever.. So I don't think the crashing has anything to do with your issue, instead I think the crashing is a reult of your failing transfers..

if you are going thru a hub, try going direct via crossover, see if the problem persists... If you're using crossover, try another cable or a hub...

Basically swap out the network components 1 by 1 till you find the problematic item

Well, I've tried both suggestions and the xbox still crashes.  By the way, i'm using 10BaseT Ethernet is that's a concern.   I'll go buy myself 100MBit ethernet card and try that.
I tried to backup the xbox's c drive and I managed to transfer 43.7MB of data before it crashed but when I try to copy the evo-x dash to the xbox (2.68MB) it crashes after around 250kb.
