About Games On Hdd
« on: July 31, 2002, 07:13:00 AM »

I don't know if anyone else has noticed, but it seems like alot of the problems to do with games working from the hdd are random... What works for one, doesn't for another...

My guess is, this is due to something simple... So I ask you folks having problems, your directory structure...

Are you burying the games in 15 sub-dirs?

Are you naming the folders for the games with spaces?

Are you making the folder names unnecesserily long?

Are you renaming default.xbe?

Take the game that has been fucking up on you the most, put it in the root of f with a folder name 8 chars or less, see if that fixes it..

The reason I say this is because this is how I've setup my xbox (albeit f is a god damned mess), and i've yet to try a game that didn't work flawlessly off the hdd... I mean, I have 60 games on it so I haven't tried every one in depth, but every one I have tried has seemed to work just fine.

Ok, so you'll all post 8 fucking pages about what games won't work for you, but not 1 person will contribute some help to finding a solution for all..

All mine have worked flawlessly- but I just have a "games" directory - then a heavily trunicated name of the game  - i.e. max payne = max, etc.

I wonder if the problems are caused by bad rips, possibly related to the "squishy" dvd drives M$ put in the boxes?

Peronslaly I'm running a 5400rpm 160gb maxtor, and it's been a dream... Albeit I'm wasting a few gb, but when I have a choise between my f being 111gb or 129gb, I think the 160 is worth it...

Also, allthough it doesn't matter to be even a lil, noise seems to be a concern for alot of you folks, and surprisinlgy, going against maxtor trend.. This drive is surprisingly quiet.

rzyzzy : Funny how we both have every game working flawlessly, and we both stuck with 8.3 naming standards... Hopefully the newbs having problems are reading this...

All my games are in : F:\Games\

I use normal Jolliet named dirs, like "Star Wars Jedi Starfighter"

Everything works fine for me.. I use a PC-Bioxxx mod-chip

Using a 80gb 5400 rpm Maxtor disk

The 7200rpm drives are noticably faster at loading and copying the games.  factory hd gave me 1000k/sec transfer rate from my pc to the hd.  I put in a 40gig 7200rpm drive and the trasnfer rate jumped to 2700k/sec.

A reason for non workin games can be languages too.
For instance, 2002.07.17.Prisoner_of_War_RIP_XBOX-RIOT only got english language, other language being ripped off. My xbox language is french, so the game intro would launch but then nothing but a black screen.
I changed it to english and i was set , it was running perfect.
Make sure you check that part when u deal with pal/multi rips.

7200 RPM 120 Gig Western digital SE drive.

All games running off of F:\Games

Not 8.3 naming. (Full game name under F:\games\)

43 original games currently dumped on the drive and all work fine so far.

All demos ripped out of any games that have them.

ok

80 gig  7200rpm  every game i've ever put on my hd (about a million)  has worked everytime.

don't download any rips.  big waste of time.

goto blockbuster and rent a game, load evox, put it in, ftp the entire disk into a folder on your pc hd, then send if over to e: (like e:\007 or e:\halo).

don't waste your time renaming anything.  just link you default.xbe in menu.ini

they're are some tools that will just copy the d drive to a partition on the xbox hd with out using your pc as a middle man but i've never used one and am not too sure about the actual process so i can't really say much about em'.    try one out if you want, but   if you just copy the entire game onto your hd if will work 100% of the time.

I have removed some of the xdemo folders from games like halo and PGR cause who the fuck actually plays the demos?    games still work without the demos included because, as you may have noticed, the xbox shuts down the real game you're playing to load up the demo seperatly.  they are totally independant.

hope i helped at least someone instead of just wasting space.
