Anybody Ealse Replace The Xbox Dvd?
« on: July 23, 2002, 10:20:00 AM »

I'm using a pc-dvd rom but it's mounted on top of the closed Xbox. I didn't want to force it to fit into the spot where the original dvd-rom is. It looks ok though, it's a black dvd-rom and I have a black plastic sleeve around it so it meshes pretty well with the color scheme. One day I might bring myself to actually cutting away some plastic to get it to fit inside the box.

What is the point of adding a computer DVD-ROM to the XBOX instead of using the original (and sexy looking smile.gif  ) DVD-ROM that comes perfectly fitted into the BOX?

Im new so if its an easy answer no need to spit it in my face, were all on the same team

i got it to work without having to have the orginal xbox dvd  pluged in at all! theres no need , i did do a little cutting to get the pc dvd rom to fit, but now all my games boot, cd-r, cd-rw, dvd-r, dvd-rw, and they boot in half the time.

Can you elaborate on this Hexxmap? Assuming you have the correct version of Xbox (3944), Does the Lite-On 16X drive fit mechanically into the Xbox and is the front door of the DVD in the Xbox adaptable to the Lite-On drive?

Also, how would the eject button on the console be wired to the replacement drive?

Thanks for the feedback.

the xbox dvd rom is not connected to the xbox in any way! the yellow wires are connected to nothing! i did do some cutting to the inside of the xbox to allow the pc dvd rom to fit in. and i did need to make a custom eject button sence its no longer visable. but all games boot except orginal

Well I have 2 xboxes, 1 with a Thompson drive, one with a Philips.  The one with a phillips drive needs to have the original CD connected to the yellow wire in order to use a PC DVD Rom.  The one with the Thompson does not.  Both have the 3944 bios but they also had a different drive (one has a 10G and the other an 8G).

So it IS possible to attach a DVDrom without having the original attached, it just depends of the model you have.

Yes, the dilemma is do we want to boot original games, or copies. It seams that in most cases the older version of Xbox (BIOS 3944) did not require that the yellow conductor interface connect to the original DVD, however the newer BIOS 4034 does.

Warbeast have you changed to the lite-on drive yet? If so how does it look and work? Please give me some info because I would love to do this mod. smile.gif I do have the older bios (3944) so if I change the DVD drive can I still read original games without having the yellow wires connected?
