You have to set the static IP, then reboot and see what it says.

BASS: you already "picked a random number".  Since I assume you don't have a cable/dsl router or anything, you need to find out the internal lan IP for your computer, with the gateway information if it's there.

1. Run "winipcfg" if you're in Win98, I think Me does it too, I'm not sure.
2. Write down the IP address for your LAN adapter, like a 3com or realtek, whatever you have.  Also, write down the gateway if it's given.
3. Use your computer's address, except change the LAST number.  For example: if your computer is 10.0.0.1, you can change yours to 10.0.0.3.

Enter this into the static IP information, and put the SAME gateway number as your computer in the gateway area.  then press back twice, and "reboot" your dashboard.  This should help you a great deal.

QUOTE
The tutorial says "This network screen gives you the ip that you will then login anonymously through flashfxp to."

I can see how that would confuse, that would only be applicable if you had a DHCP on the network which would issue you a dynamic IP.
If the IP address is full of zeros you will need to set a static as explained in the previous posts.

HOWEVER, If your xbox is reporting 'no link' (as you mentioned) its the same as not having connected the CAT5 cable to the box at all!
If your not going via a hub, you will need a x-over CAT5 cable (tx & rx are reversed - bit like a null modem cable) else your device won't even get link status (that's if your trying to connect direct from xbox NIC to your PC NIC)
Once you get that bit sorted, follow what's posted above to set a static IP.

Which gets me thinking.... if the xbox uses M$'s tcp/ip stack, doesn't it support APIPA?
