I've been to numerous forums, and no one has seen this.  I figured that you guys would be the ones to ask.

My friend's Xbox is acting very strange.  The Phillips DVD tray opens by itself all of a sudden while playing games.  Sometimes it opens all the way. Sometimes it only opens an inch.  Sometimes it remains open, and sometimes it closes again.  There is no set time for this to occur.  It happens at 1 minute, 15 mins., 1 hour.  It varies.  I hope someone can shed some light on this.  The light blinks while the tray is open and it's the normal color.  Also, the xbox doesn't sound too healthy when the tray opens and closes on it's own.  It sounds fine when you press eject.      Thanks in advance for the help.

i dont suppose its a crystal 1.6 is it?  if it is i have had the same problem with some that i have softmodd.
one of them was brand new and was caked with filth, a quick clean fixed the problem tho.

No, it's a regular ol Xbox.  I put his DVD drive in my Xbox and there are no problems.  Could it be the hard drive?  Maybe the eject button?

Actually, it is the DVD drive.  It finally acted up in my machine.  It took a while, but it did the same thing.

very strange symptoms... clean the inside of the dvd drive?  look for shorts, etc?

Everything is clean.  Don't have a meter to look for shorts.  Everything seemed fine.  Just going to replace his DVD drive.  Strange symptoms, indeed.  No one in any forum that I've visited has experienced this problem(including Xbox official forum).  It's like hitting the lottery.  Only, it SUCKS.
