Can't you just use the X-box HD Prep Utility to format and prepare the hard drive?

so i gotta question.  my bro has a modchip with evox on his hdd.  can i perpare the hdd without using the swap trick.  entering the hex and formating the F drive using his xbox.  then take that hdd and put it into my xbox without a modchip.  i did that with my hdd now.  well i mean i stuck my hdd into his xbox and copied evox onto my hdd then put it back into my xbox and can run games of the hdd and i dont have a mod.  so i know that works.  but if i set up the hdd will the xbox bios recognize it?i assume that if the enigmah bios will recognize it without any kind of hdd patch that the xbox bios will?
thanx alot

There seems to be some contradicting info throughout this thread. So I want to clear something up before I attempt it.

This is what I have done thus far:

1. Installed Enigmah
2. Flashed Evox 2.3 onto Xbox bios.
3. Have Xbox booting to Evox Dashboard.
4. Zeroed a new WD 80gb HD with HD prep tool.
5. Added partitions with HD prep tool.

Ok, now I've installed the drive in the xbox, and can boot to the evox dashboard via CDRW.

This is where the confusion is. Do I just format the F drive? or do I format C, E and F? And in what order?

Help is greatly appreciated, I would hate to have to zero the drive again.

Thanks!

no...... trent u don't format c,e... just f:

heres how...

boot to dashboard get ip and hookup to flash fxp...
then  under commands and Raw commands type in
formatpath \device\harddisk0\partition6
that will give u a 8 character letter like AA345RR2..(that is the key)
with raw command again type in
formatdrive  AA345RR2 (switch ever your key # is)...
and then look a drive f: it should be formated...
also when format f it only thats a couple of seconds...

thats it.. your done

Tret & score23

Thanks for the replies. I formatted C, E and F and it worked.

A side note though, is that my C drive was actually device 2 not 1, so:

C = 2
E = 1
F = 6

Interesting.

20 games on the drive and all is well, Thanks again!

Just connect new hard disc to your computer via ATA interface (ie the ribbon cable has Mater/Slave connections writen on em). Plug new HDD to the slave connector. Do the patch with WinHex as shown  in Cr4z33 post (it will be Hard Disc No 2). Connect drive to X-Box and follow the rest of the tutorial as shown in Cr4z33 post.

I've got an Enigma chip, and the evolution software and would very much like to upgrade my disk to an 80GB+. As I understand that's not possible with my modchip without flashing the x-box bios. But would it work if I formatted my HD in a X-box with the Evolution-X modchip ?

                   Nope

Different Hard disk keys.

Question...

with the enigmah chip...
you have to flash xbox bios...
by cutting 2 wires and soldering jumpers...

and could even put in switches for selecting enigmah chip or evo bios (correct?)

Next question...   once evo bios has been flashed OVER xbox bios...can it be REflashed BACK to XBOX original bios?
Then... hehe is there anyone that has backed up the xbox bios so that this can be done.. or can I do it with just the tools released?

Would like to be able to put things back if need be.
otherwise get a chip with the evo bios on it and put in switches right?

ANY info will help.  THANKS!

Yes, there is! biggrin.gif
There's a new tutorial on this thread at XBoxHacker.net forum made by opcode:
QUOTE
Ok I've successfully upgraded my xbox HD without doing that xbox swap trick, follow these instructions carefully:

********************************************************************************
* HowTo upgrade your xbox hard drive using evolutionx by opcode.
********************************************************************************

1. Boot evolutionx with your OLD hard drive still in the xbox. FTP to your xbox copy your C:\ and E:\ partitions to somewhere, you'll need them later.

2. From your PC format the new hard disk to fill it with all zeroes (THIS IS VERY IMPORTANT), you can do this in a variety of ways I used IBM's Drive Fitness Test version 3.01 (here), you can also use linux's dd cmd or use winhex to write all zeroes to the drive.  All that is important is the drive is completely 0's.  After formatting it look at it with winhex or something to make sure it is all 0's.

3. Write the following hex values at the offsets given to your drive, I recommend using winhex to accomplish this.  This will create empty C:\ (system) and E:\ (saves) partitions. If you are using winhex paste the hex values as 'ASCII Hex' if it ask you.

Start Address  HEX Values
====================================
0x8ca80000    4641545840F0484D2000000001
0xabe80000    4641545850D2154D2000000001

4. Hook the drive up to your xbox and boot off the evolutionx CD/DVD.

5. FTP the C:\ and E:\ contents you saved in step 1 back to your xbox to their perspective partitions. (note if using FlashFXP you should refresh both the C and E directories when you change to them on the xbox, otherwise FlashFXP seems to cache the old directory/file structure from the old drive).

6. Format the F partition using evolutionx by sending 2 raw FTP commands to the xbox (I used FlashFXP for this).  The commands are as follows:

a. Formatpath \Device\Harddisk0\Partition6

This will give you a key, something like:
200 FormatKey key for '\Device\Harddisk0\PartitionX'. Where key will be a 4 byte value in hex (8 characters)

b. FormatDrive key

Where key is the key returned from command a.

NOTE: To successfully format partition F use must be using the evolutionx bios and have your xbox booted with that bios.

7.  Your done!
