Failing Psu
« on: October 10, 2004, 10:56:00 AM »

I tried to use my xbox just now and when I pressed power, nothing happened. It had been working the day before, and I had not touched the actual xbox since then so I assumed the problem to be the obvious causes.
A- The xbox is not plugged in to the outlet.
or
B- The power cord isn't completely plugged into the xbox.

The xbox was plugged in and and when I went to push the cord into the back of the xbox(to make sure it was in there) I heard the all too familiar buzzing and popping sounds of a high voltage short. I unplugged it and whipped out my torx set. Oppened it up and tried the power cord once more.

Here is the best I can describe it. When plugged in like a normal xbox, there is no power going to it. It will not turn on, nothing. BUT when I push the poer cord in and upwards, it starts buzzing and popping, and with my HDD removed I could see the bottom of the PSU sparking right near where the cord plugs in. I took the PSU out and looked it over. I really cant see anything that looks problematic. No small piece of metal bridgeing 2 contacts, no charred or severely burnt parts. I don't know what else to look for.

So right now I am about 99% sure that a new PSU will solve my problem, but if someone knows how this happened or if it's an easy fix, that would be even better.
Here are some high-res pics in case it helps. Maybe if you know what to look for. I sure don't. I believe it's a 1.3-1.4 xbox. Also, where is the cheapest place I can buy a new PSU?
