Is it worth it to try and buy a replacement laser for my thomson drive?  Or is it just better to give in and buy samsung replacement drive?

I bought the replacement lazer off of ebay - no complaints whatsoever - plays tdk dvd-r and fuji dvd-rw great - haven't tried anything else

bottom line - i took the cheap route and very satisfied with my decision

I would go the samsung route.  Thomson drives blow and wouldn't be worth the time or effort to fix.  I took my perfectly good one out of my xbox and threw it into a brick wall a couple dozen times.  after the hundreds of times it wouldn't read discs i finally decided to put it out of its misery office space style  .  Have had the samsung ever since and it has NEVER failed to read any disc i throw at it.  you will be %100 satisfied with the samsung

I would have to disagree, samsungs although are ideal for reading cd-rw's, the new thomsons on the market rock on reading dvd-r, I havent had one yet that it didnt read a disk.

As for the question, replacing the laser is a cheap route but for $30 you can get a new thomson (not used)

don't you think since he's having to replace the laser it would be an older model of the thomson.  they are usually good for a year at the very least.  And i had a new thomson myself in a v1.5 xbox and do not like it nearly as much as the samsung.  yeah they read MOST dvd-r media but they don't read cd-r cd-rw worth a crap.  the moral of the story is: you get what you pay for.

right but you talking about a differance of $40 for the two drives. for $70 he could get a new thomson and get a xenium chip. I myself prefer it's built in samba support for transferring files, dont have to worry about cd-rw, cd-r, dvd-r or whatever, just transfer it over a network.

Dont get me wrong, I used to be die hard samsung cause it was the only thing I ever got to read cd-rw, but once i got a dvd-r my outlook changed and even if the thomson goes out, you could buy two thomsons for the price of one samsung so the life expectancy isnt really an issue.

For just a little over $20 US and about a half hour of your time you virtually will have a new thomson. Sure it won't read cd-r, but it will read pretty much any dvd-r and -rw. This looks like the same guy I got mine from a year ago, the page and pics look the same. I guess I don't care if it plays cd-r, because I have a standalone cd changer and for the two games in my collection that ACTUALLY would fit on a cd-r it isn't worth the extra $$$$ for a whole new drive, IMO.
