Can't Use All My Harddrive Space
« on: August 29, 2004, 06:08:00 PM »

here's my situation

my xbox was modded last weekend by a friend using the xbit chip. I put a 160gig hdd in it and when he was done I was able to see 25gigs on F, 5gigs on E and the rest of the 130 gigs were nowhere to be found.

I was unable to determine what bios he used cause under settings, BIOS Version is 'unknown'. I have since updated the bios to x2_4983 and I'm running evox build 3935. I created a boot disk to try to reformat my drives and was successful in booting from the cdrw, but when it formats it goes back to exactly what it was before with the extra space still missing. Incidentally, evox registers drive G with 0 free space and the BIOS Version is still unknown.

I have tried the UseGDrive=yes option, and that didn't seem to do anything (Even though I can see a G folder when I ftp into my xbox). I'm kinda at the limit of what I know to do.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

thanks in advance.  <

sorry i can't help but encourage.
I know what its like to need help and sit there waiting for someone to post.

I have the same problem, until I was able to patch my bios with XBtools so that it
could see more than 135GB.  Your problem sounds different.

good luck, hang in there and someone will post what you need.  <

This is a common 'problem'.

You have a CLJ (Cylinder Limitation Jumper) set on your HD - this needs to be removed/changed to access the full capacity. With this installed, the HD is limited to 32gb (which is what u have - 25gb F: + other partitions).

Check your HD manufacturer website for jumper settings if necessary. You will need to reformat F: when done. Make sure you use an '06' type bios so that all space is assigned to F (you dont need a G: with a 160gb HD).  <

if the drive wasn't brand new when I put it in, could that have something to do with it? I've seen somewhere that suggests using XboxHDPrep utility to write 0s to the partitions... is that worth a try?  <

I just had this exact same problem.  My drive had the 32 gig limited on it.  I also found out that the cable select jumper option would also "clip" my drive.  I resolved it by changing the jumper to "master".  Let me know how this works out.

You dont need to use hdprepare.  My drive was also used before and that was not the problem.

Change the jumper and reformat.  Make sure your .ini has the G: enabled  <

from what I can tell, my hdd (Western Digital WD1600) doesn't have a setting for clj. It was set to single/master (no jumpers) before, so I changed it to master w/slave present, then to cable select. Each time I booted off the cd-rw bootdisk I made, formatted the drive and went to settings only to find I still only had 25gigs on F. G shows up but has 0 for free space even though my evox.ini doesn't have the option to use the G drive (cause I'm using x2_4983_06.

Incidentally, I gave XboxHDPrep a shot before reading that I didn't need to, and when I loaded that program up, it said my hdd only had like 32 gigs on it which is just what strud said would happen...

thanks for all your help  <

Well, WD drives have an 'alternate' jumper setting which will limit the drive size. See here for details:
http://wdc.custhelp.com/cgi-bin/wdc.cfg/ph...ldHRpbmdz&p_li=

It seems to require 2 jumpers, so unless you have 2 or possibly a dodgy jumper header, it may not be this (but it must be related somehow since you have 32gb).

From the link above:
CODE
What happens after the drive is configured with the Alternate Jumper Settings?
The full capacity of the drive is not recognized. In order for the system to boot properly, the BIOS will recoginze smaller drive capacity. Depending on your BIOS, your drive will recongize one of the following sizes: 2.1GB, 8.4GB, 32GB.
