Usb Hardrive Is This Possible?
« on: August 04, 2004, 02:25:00 AM »

I've looked at the tutorials about adding additional hard drives but nowhere is there any mention of using an external usb hard drive.

Has ne1 tried this?  I've got a usb adapter that fits into one of the controller ports on the xbox, supplied with the xenium ice.
Can I attach an external hard drive to this?

How would it need to be formatted?

Thanks.

not really. the harddrive would ONLY work as a memory card, or under linux. also, it's USB 1.1, so it's way slow.

currently, it could ONLY work as a memory card... I have looked into this already... Since everything on the xbox is kernel based, the moment you launched anything off the external hard drive, the drive would no longer be accessible... this is because all the usb information (drivers) you need to access the files is resident in memory, and when you load a new xbe, this information is dumped... so if this was going to be possible, then whatever you launch needs to have the usb driver info in it also...

This is also the same reason you cannot launch games on a network drive...

HERE is a complete write-up about this rather common question.
