Using Sodler To Attach A Fan.
« on: June 18, 2004, 04:18:00 PM »

I just got a new fan and was wondering if I can use solder instead of the plastic thnigs that attach the fan to the card.  The bottom of the dan is copper.   So I was wondering id that worked because the plastic things are 2 thick.,  Or will the copper heat up and melt the solder?? I dunno, someone please tell me quickly.

man, your typing is shit.

from what i was able to decipher, i dont see why you wouldnt be able to just solder the leads.  i couldn't figure out what the hell you were talking about with the bottom being copper.  if the fan is copper i would make sure that its not going to short on anything, actually i probably wouldnt use it at all.

LOL, Im srry.  I was in a hurry.  Ok.  This is for my computer, so help me out.  My graphics card has a fan that started to make really loud noises, so I replaced that fan with a new one i got today.  The new fan, unfortunately, does not fit into the holes that the old fan fit into.  Luckily, there were 4 smaller circles that looked coated with solder.  The guy at Frys told me that I could put it in there, so i thought it would be safe and solder the fan onto the graphics card instead of using the plastic pins that the fans supplied with.  Now what I want to know is is it safe to solder the fan onto the graphics card that way(Im guessing its ok because there was solder on it to begin with)?  Also, the new fan has a copper bottom, so i wanna know if the solder will melt or not.

probably oughta just desolder the holes and use the pins. i doubt the solder pads are strong enought to hole the fan on.

Actually, the solder was stronger than the plastic pins.  I tried one plastic pin, adn the fan seemed like it was gonna fall off, but when I tried one side with solder, it held on like super glue :D.  So umm if I do it like this, do u think it will cause colling problems?
