Evolutionx And Linksys Wga54g
« on: June 02, 2004, 10:10:00 AM »

Just getting my mod up and running, and butting heads with a networking problem.

I've got a (non-modded) Xbox connected to a Linksys WGA54G, which connects to a Linksys WRT54G router in the office, where my PC is.  This setup works fine.

When I hook up the modded Xbox to the WGA54G and boot up, EvolutionX seems to not be able to pull an IP (using DHCP) from the router.  I've got StaticIP= No, and Default Gateway set correctly.

If I move the whole shebang (including a 20" TV, which is why this is a pain) into the office, and hardwire the mod to the router, it works fine.  So, the problem is in the wireless connection somewhere... anyone else seen this sort of behavior, or has a setup like this working?  I've got a 4-port hub on the way, that I'd like to use for both Xboxen behind the WGA54G... success stories appreciated on attempts at this, as well!

Further wireless details:  WEP enabled, as well as MAC whitelisting.  Both Xboxen MAC addresses added to MAC filter list on WRT54G.

Update:

After some jostling around, I got the true xbos bios/dashboard to boot and access Live! with no trouble.  EvoX pulls an IP now, as well.  WRT54G router shows the evox IP in the client table.  BUT... I stil can't FTP, tracert, or even ping the xbox.

Someone out there must have this working... let me know, give me some hope!

Wireless is a pain, that's all i can say. it worked for me for a whole year, then recently it just went sh!t face. If ur Linksys has Antenna's, direct them to where the router / modem are. Plug and unplug and reset Evox until the Wlan light turns on and stays on. That's all i can say without going into wireless details.

Did you enable FTP in EVOX and REBOOT after saving and exiting?

opjose:  Yes, FTP is enabled in evox, and I have no problem accessing the xbox when it's hardwired to the router.  It's only when I try to move the xbox to the wireless that I have problems.

A few things I figured out last night:

MAC cloning has to be on on the WGA54G for it to work properly.  This doesn't bode well for hooking up more than one Xbox behind it through a hub... it doesn't seem to handle switching the MAC it's cloning without a reboot.

Gorillazero:  I don't think I'm having any signal strength problems.  Right now the whole setup is in my office, with less than 10ft between WRT54G and WGA54G.  Again, normal xbox bios/dashboard has no trouble pulling an IP and accessing Live.

Strangest behavior yet:  At one point, I had the xbox pulling an IP, but the router not showing that IP in it's client table.  How in the world could it do that?

I'm pondering giving the WET54G a shot over the game adapter... hoping the ethernet bridge is more configurable than it's console-only counterpart.

Yup I've seen these problem with that particular router.

Pulling an IP but no registration in the table.

This particular router is driving me NUTS, I've tried various updates but the behaviour always comes back OVER TIME.

That's the key.

Try HARD RESETTING the router back to the factory defaults and powering it down for a few minutes.

After doing this, I'll bet you find that EVERYTHING works again.

Now you can change the configuration back to how you had it, however DO NOT load the configuration from a file! This brings the problems right back again.

Anyway, you'll find that all will be fine for many days, then the same problems will come back.

I'll bet that there is some sort of corruption or leak with their linux OS.

I hope a newer version will cure this.

I've even been toying with uploading the "full boat" linux firmware that is publically available for that router. However you loose all the nice GUI management features and you have to TELNET to the router to make changes via scripts... ugh.

Hmm... firmware could be a problem... I had forgotten I flashed this router when I was attempting to use it as a repeater a while ago.

There seems to be at least one firmware upgrade (svesoft's) that includes a web GUI... most interesting feature there is DHCP with MAC addy IP binding... might actually help in my situation.
