2 Hdd And 1 Dvd And Ide Switch
« on: March 19, 2004, 09:30:00 PM »

I bought the IDE cable from LLAMA.  On the cable I have the original HDD, a 120 GB Western digital HDD, and the original DVD drive.  There is a switch that only allows power to be supplied to one hard drive at a time.  I can boot to the original hard drive.  I can boot to original or exox dash on the second hard drive, but when ever I try to read a disc in the DVD rom I get a disc read error.  At first I thought my DVD drive had gone bad, but I found that if I diconnect the IDE cable from one or the other HDD's then it reads fine.

Does anyone know how I can modify the switch so I can have both HDDs and the DVD drive hooked up all at the same time and switch between HDD.  The idea being that I want to use xbox LIVE with the orignal Bios and HDD.

The reason I am trying to do this is because the latest information suggests the Xbox live is collecting hard drive info.  If this is the case there may be more people banned from xbox live.  Even if you are using the orginal bios and dashboard they can detect your HDD info.  For this reason I would like away to quickly switch between the original and my second hard drive.

Is the DVD drive set on master or slave? I think it needs to be master for it to work properly. The IDE cable should have 4 connectors. The first one plugs into the mobo. The second, I think is the master. Plug the DVD drive into the second connector, and then plug your HDD's in anyway you want.

I have a Xbox version 1.0 with a Phillips DVD rom.  From what i can tell there are not jumper adjustments on this DVD rom.  There are only two pins that look like a digital audio out.  No set of jumpers that I can see.

Let me describe the situation.  I have a 4 head IDE cable.  First it connects to the motherboard, then the DVD player, then the original Xbox HDD, and then a locked 120gb WD.  There is a switch that allows only one hard drive to be powered at a time.  The original hard drive boots fine, when it is supplied with power.  The second hardrive boots fine, when it is supplied with power.  But when I try to play a game in the DVD drive I get the dirty disc error.  If I unhook the IDE cable from either harddrive (which ever is not powered), then the DVD drive works fine.  I have a phillips DVD drive, and from what I can tell there are not jumper settings on it.  For those that have succeeded at the 2 hard drive mod, please help.

is it possible the connector DVD connector on the IDE cable is poorly crimped on?  try rearranging your drives (temporarily) on the IDE cable to troubleshoot.  if the DVD boots fine on another connector, it's probably the IDE cable.

Bizzaro,

Good idea.  I already thought of that.  I tried rearranging the order of the drives and still no luck.  Same problem...when I put the drive on in a different order on the cable.  I even tried putting the cable in backwards.  I thought it might be the cable so I bought two more from llama.  Both new cables had the exact same problem.  Which in my mind eliminates cable damage as being the problem.  It is either a problem with jumper settings...(some how need to change the DVD jumper settings, even though there are no visable jumpers).  Or It is a problem with concept of having 3 drives hooked to 1 IDE cable.

I have a phillips DVD drive with the original v1.0 xbox.  Does anyone know if there is a way to adjust the jumper settings on this drive (master vs slave vs cable select)?

Also I found in the xbox-scene tutorial section, a tutorial about multiple DVD players.  In this solution the person suggests having to splice into the IDE cable at wire 23 and connect that to a switch.  Is this really necessary.  The llama instructions and other sites make no mention of having to do this for dual hard drive set up.  Also the cables sent to me are 80 wire, 40 pin.  ATA 100 or 133 standard.  The tutorial about dual DVD drive is talking about a  40 wire, 40 pin IDE cable, which is the old ATA style.

I didn't read all of your previous posts but did you follow the llamma tut. on his site that says that all of the labels on the cable are wrong and should be folded a certain way?  I have done the mod and have no problems on my end.

d7onr8,

I tried their directions exactly.  I put the cable in "backwards" as they suggested.  And still no results.  I would like to hear more from you.  Which moddle hard drive do you have.  Which moddle xbox?  Which chip and bios are you running?  I don't know why mine won't work.  Do you mind sending a pic of how you set up your power switch.  Any help is apprecieated.

I'm on a 1.0 box with a wires install X2lite (old) that I turn off with the X2 switch kit running evox 1.3285 dashboard with x2_4981.06 bios modded to increase fan speed to 80% and embedded eeprom, have a Samsung dvd drive and a Western Digital 120gb (not lockable), and also an annoying 3 fan mod on the side of the case.  I bought the same kit as you from llamma and followed these tuts exactly:

More so this one http://llamma.com/xbox/Mods/xbox_4_connect...cable_udma_.htm than this one http://llamma.com/xbox/Mods/extra_harddrive.htm

The only problem I have is that sometimes my box will power up but no video will be displayed.  However, I had this problem BEFORE I did this dual hard drive mod and I believe it happens because of my crappy 3 fan mod on the side that taps inline to the power supply via the harddrive.  I just restart the box again and usually it boots fine.

The other hard drive I'm using is my orginal Xbox one.  I hardly ever use it though but everytime I switch over (with the power off of course) it boots fine.  As far as splicing a section of the ide cable I'm pretty sure you don't need to do this because I read somewhere (I think llamma) that the Xbox needs all wires in the ide cable in tact.

I would take pictures of my setup but honestly it is the exact same one in llammas first tut labeled above.  For installation to fit correctly, I had to remove the metal shielding from the top section of the box and drill down some plastic that prevented it from not closing correctly.  I even almost spliced the cable because of the protruding plastic and one of my ide wires is exposed.

Since you say that you bought even more cable from llamma I highly doubt that its the cable.  I know you said that you tried some configs backwards but maybe you DO have the ide connector on backwards on the dvd rom drive?  Check your pins on the dvd drive and make sure none are bent or broken or missing.  Also check the yellow cable on the mobo and dvd drive.  I can't think of anything else so I hope this helps and you get this straight.  BTW, since you say you have an extra set of cables would you be willing to part with it?  I would buy again from llamma but the shipping for the cables is so much for something that can be sent in a padded envelope!  Let me know how things turn out and if you want to sell your extra set.

d7onr8,

I tired reversing the cable both ways, and still would not work.  I am using a home brew open bioxx.  My hard drive is also WD 120gb special edition JB with the 8mb buffer...I was able to lock it.  I digress...I wonder if there is something special about the samsung drive.  I have the phillips drive.  maybe it is drive specific.

My cable is labled in this order

Mobo--------DVD---------Slave-----------Master

And it connected it to my box this way, repectively:

WD 120gb------original xbox HDD--------DVD-------mobo

Is this correct?  Do you know if there are any jumpers on the back of your DVD drive?

I'm pretty sure there are no jumpers on any drive because I've modded all types and have not seen any other jumper on any besides the port for the yellow cable.  My drive is the JBRTL special edition 8mb cache but config magic couldn't lock it.  Your setup seems correct according to the pictures.  Thats exactly how mine is set up too.  If you tried with both cables and still no luck, your dvd drive is probably acting weird about the power distribution.  I'm no expert on it though but if you could find a friends box and swap dvd drives just to test things out, you will be able to eliminate at least one more possibility for failure.

I have a friend coming over with another DVD drive tonight.  i am going to see if that is the problem.  But if another DVD drive still has the problem, then I am back to the drawing board.

At least you'll eliminate another possibility.  If he'll let you, put the cables in his and try the dual hard drive mod on his.  That'll eliminate another possibility.  Let us know if you get it working.
