Where Theres Smoke...
« on: January 24, 2004, 04:27:00 PM »

Just thought I'd share this experience with everyone for the record.

I ordered a Xecutor 2.3b Lite from http://www.xbox-modchips.com, and it took about 2 weeks to arrive.  I went about the install and everything went just dandy (I'm very experienced with soldering so it was a clean and nice job.)  Booted it up and loaded evox and all the goodies, and had a jolly good time with it.

About 5 hours later, I'm out of the room, and I faintly smell ozone.  "Oh #*@$!" I think and dash to my server room.  Everything is okay.  I run to my desktop, everything is okay.  I figure I must have imagined it and walk back to the xbox which is cycling all 3 led colours, and showing a black screen.  "Uh oh."

I figure something must have been jostled like the d0 wire or something, so I pop it open and examine, everything is perfect, soders are clean and rock solid.  Then I notice the chip has a big black scoarch mark down the side.  On close inspection I can see that on the burnt edge, the top layer of the chip has totally burnt off and the metal underneth it has burnt right through and is in 2 pieces.  Pretty clear indicator of where things went wrong.

So clearly this chip is defective, and I'm of course wanting a new one (and my xbox is useless without one, seeing as I've replaced the dash... (and yes I could unlock it and put it back on my pc but thats a HUGE pain in the arse).  The policy says on the xbox-modchips.com site that they will replace defective chips, and so I emailed them explaining what happened.  It's been one day and I have not recieved a reply as of yet.

I'll keep this thread updated on how they handle this and we can all see how this plays out.  <

That is not promising news...  I will send em a couple emails over the week and post here again if I get no reply and add my name to the list of people who were farked.

Has anyone ever had an experience with a chip burning or heard of it?  <

To use EvoX.

you're not supposed to replace it. The two can co-exist with no problems. All you had to do was leave your xbox dash board as xboxdash.xbe, and put evox in as evoxdash.xbe, and put your evox.ini file in it. *sigh* i don't think there is any way to fix your xbox unless you get another chip.  <

Oh I know that NOW. :)  I just wasn't thinking when I did it and just replaced the M$ one.  The chip runs it fine... But no chip, no dash.

Technically I could fix it by unlocking the drive, using the backup on my pc, relocking the drive and putting it back in the xbox, but it's gonna be easier just to get a new chip, which hopefully I can get replaced for free...

I've posted this to a couple forums and have heard of a few people with the same situation, and the same total lack of help from the dealer.  Might be easier just to buy a new one then try to deal with them over several months...

animex2: Did you just end up getting a new chip?

This is what you're going to have to do. You ordered it through xbox-modchips which means you used mypaysystems.com .. THIS is who you talk to. You log in and find the transaction you made (it will be there). Then fill out the refund form. They know how much garbage xbox-mochips.com is. Order from System-mods or modchips.ca or someone reputable and get your money back through mypaysystems .. you could spend your entire LIFE and not get any productive stuff done talking to xbox-modchips ..

hope this helps ..

Whew!  I was reading this thread and starting to freak out about my new X2 lite.  I couldn't remember the name of the vendor, but modchips.com sounded familiar so I started to sweat a little.  Then I remembered that I just used the link from xbox-scene, and re-traced to System-Mods.com which apparently has a really good reputation.

Just a quick hint to anybody that hasn't bought their mod-chip yet, the guys (and gals?) here at x-box scene really know their stuff, so I just followed the link that they provided to find a reputable vendor (you should too).

Just click the link at the top of the home page labelled "mod-chips" and select the type of mod chip you are interested in.  <
