2 Harddrives
« on: December 31, 2003, 11:15:00 PM »

alright well i set up a 2nd hard drive...i made the hard drive switch...i added the extra connector on the ide cable...but i have a problem

i have it setup in this order:
ide connector 1: motherboard
ide connector 2: dvd drive
ide connector 3: xbox original hard drive
ide connector 4: 120 gig

everything works...but the xbox drive only works if i unplug the ide cable from the 120 gig drive. If i leave it in...i get the red and green lights...

I tried changing around jumper settings on both drives (setting both to master...leaving one master and one slave...leaving both on cable select...etc)

anyone have any idea of what could be going wrong? Is there an evox setting i need to change?

My ide connector that i added does work...just not when the other hard drive is plugged in.......

Does your hdd switch work. Is it making sure only 1 hdd drive at a time has power?

yup. I checked it with a volt meter and the switch does work. Only one hard drive has power at a time.

But even if i take the switch out and manually unplug the 120 gig hard drive...the same problem still happens. The only way the orginal hard drive works is if i unplug the ide cable from the 120 gig. Is it possible that the connectors on the ide cable are to close together?

If it helps i have a:
v1.5 motherboard
western digital 120 gig hd
m7 bios
evox dashboard v1.8.3752

I had the exact same problem as you.  I made an IDE cable and a switch to switch the power between the two drives and I had the exact same problem.  I tried switching the HD by power and by the wire 23(i think thats the right wire) and nothing seemed to work.  So I got a trios and it worked fine.

well...the xbox drive is only 8 gigs, it wouldnt be worth it to spend the money on a trios...if it came to that i'd just take out the xbox drive and use my 120 gig.

theres gotta be a way to switch drives without using a trios though right? i mean how does it work for other people??

well its worth it for me cuz i run exploits.  One hdd is completely stock and the other one is modified with font exploits.  When I want to play my back ups, i select one hard drive and when i want to go on XBL, I select the other.  Also the hdd with font exploit has the IP settings all screwed up so that it can not sign on to xbl and ban me.  so it was worth it for me.

A lot of people seemed to have the same problem as us.  Some went with trios and some just game up.  Others had no problem at all..  I tried to figure out the differences between the ppl who had problems and the ones who didnt, but I could not get enough responses to come to a conclusion.  Also afte the 137gb barrier was broken, not too many ppl were really interested in running a hdd switch anymore.  So you will find very few people who are concerned about it.

well...i switched the ide configurations...making the ide cable go like:
mother board
dvd
120 gig
xbox

or:
mobo
xbox
120 gig
dvd

i tried changing things around like that a few diffrent ways. It seems like the ONLY way the xbox drive will work is if the 120 gig's ide cable isn't plugged in.

Than i thought...well...why is it that the 120 gig will work when the xbox drive is plugged in...but the xbox drive wont work when the 120 gig is plugged in??

I'm thinking it's because the xbox drive is locked...and the 120 gig isnt.

So my question is...if i format the xbox drive...will that unlock it?

if it helps, i'm getting a servie error 13:

Service Error 13
Info: Dashboard launch failed (due to missing/bad key, or anything else that would prevent it from running) and the dashboard didn't specify why it failed.
Solution: Lock the Harddisk if not done so or try one of the 4 different MS Dashboard versions.

(taken from http://www.x111.com/bored/viewtopic.php?t=1283)

the thing is...im getting this error when i switch to the xbox drive...which is locked (i didnt really touch that drive...besides installing evox) AND when i unplug the 120 gig drive, the xbox drive works...

I dont have a modchip, so I have both of my drives locked.  Unlocking both of them might not be a bad idea to try.  You dont want to format the drive though.  You want to get the key and unlock it.  I think there is a program now that can unlock the drive while the drive is in the xbox.

Try booting the xbox with 1 drive at a time.  See if you get a different code with or with out a game.  With a game in the drive I would get code 21 and with no game in the drive I would get code 13.
