128mb Ram Again
« on: October 21, 2003, 03:41:00 AM »

Hi,
Yesterday I soldered those 4 chips to my V1.1 box and it doesnt work of course. Did anybody solder additional RAM to the 1.1 mobo and it worked? I woudnt like to desolder that chips cause its crazy (one chip had only 99 legs :D, but I brigded it and everything is ok with the bridging - I checked with a multimeter). Please, dont say the chips are fucked :D. I had soldered RAM one time earlier to 1.0 and it did not work. Desoldering is nightmare (but I did it :)).

So the main question is: does adding the RAM work on 1.1 mobo?

as far as I know... they are supposed to have 100 legs.. not 99

and if you were using a simple soldering iron then you screwed something up... you need a hot air soldering station for something like that.

a 15 watt works fine for these (with the proper tip and solder)
I'd love to do this mod, but I cant find the chips.

@StymieX

Over at the MAMEoX forums, there's a guy selling 20 packs of the RAM chips. If you're capable of doing it, then I'll pay you to install them on my v1.0 as well. See what you can turn up, or PM me.

@black_light

No. Several homebrew/hacked BIOSes support it. Running retail only makes 64 MB available, but running the hacked/homebrew makes 128 MB available.

@chelrob

Only if the apps are designed to take advantage of the memory footprint. Retail software doesn't just malloc( ) whatever it can get its hands on. It knows there's a concrete RAM size limit, so it fits itself into that space.

3rd Party apps like MAMEoX, GentooX, and other software can be compiled to use 128 MB.

So, your games won't care.

http://xbox.makii.pl/?faq=128ram there is one. In polish, ehehe :). I could make a tutorial, but now when I have all chips soldered in, how can I make a tut :P?

Most important thing is to put the chip (that you want to solder in a moment) in the same position as the nearest RAM chip lays.

How about an english version that covers the process in more detail with better pics?

Like the actual soldering process from begining to end (preping the board, cleaning the board, using tools required, ect...).

Not to be an ass, but that tutorial is barbaric.  :lol: Also, you've followed this one twice and both upgrades failed, right?  :(
