I tried pinging the xbox and it completed successfully. Only problem is I'm on the internet at the moment, so i wonder if it still pings when i jump off. I'll give it a go later.

I don't think that will make much difference infantig, but i'll give it a go. thanks.

I still hope someone can give me a deffinite answer !!! PLEASE !!!

I would say get rid of your pc's gateway. make it 0.0.0.0
your just confusing things with that gateway.

I Tried Pinging the xbox when not connected to the internet and all i got was a
"REQUEST TIMED OUT" message.

The IP settings for my PC and the XBOX have got to be right. Otherwise how else would it make a connection when i'm on the net.

It's obviously got something to do with certain ports that have been locked on the pc and when I jump on the internet they unlock which allows me to make a connection.

I don't know, but that seems like the only reasonable answer. The question is what ports get opened when connecting to the net.

I'm still very confused............ blink.gif

I may have an idea, but can you give some more details about how your network is setup, i.e., hubs, routers, firewalls, etc.

By the way, listen to mrRobinson and remove that gateway, it's definitely not neccessary and can cause problems.  A computer never points to itself as the gateway.

Warpath , what other networking equipment do you have? hub, router, etc . . .  If you are getting a connection after connecting then it's going out of your hub/router/modem then coming back in and into the xbox. Like the others said, unles you are paying for an ip address there's no reason to have a gateway address inserted. For that matter you don't even need subnet info.

If you need help in configuring XP, I might be able to assist you.

If you're using a hub and router config in your house, I can help you connect to the xbox.

Thanks for your replies guys.

I have no router, no hub and the only firewall gear that I'm aware of is the stuff pre-built into windows xp(but iv'e turned that off<i think>)

All I have is an XBOX connected to my PC with a Cross-over cable. The way I connect to the internet is via a phone cable plugged into my 56k modem (I'm living in Australia).

I have tried removing the gateway, but there is no success. It continues to annoy me!

***** IMPORTANT ******
What brand of computer?
Is your modem built onto your Mobo?
Is your NIC built onto your Mobo?
If you responded yes to any of the above questions, do not proceed.
I need to know the maker of the Mobo and the chipset as well as model numbers.

*********** Connection Correction Steps *******************
How did you configure your internet connection? Did you allow your ISP software to do the configuration or did you enter it manually? Here's a possible quick fix. First copy all of your internet connection information. Then remove your your network adapter (Hardware Manager). Remove your modem.

Make sure you have all of the software and information needed before attempting this . . .

Do the usual reboot. Re-install the network adapter. Do not give it any specific information. Let it give you a blank generic configuration.

You should be able to connect directly to your Xbox now.

Remember do not give it any specific information.

BTW, if it tries to setup your internet connection via your network adapter, just use the LAN connection choice.

After your NIC is operating properly, re-install the modem. Use the Internet Connection Wizard.

After the modem is installed, check to see if you still can connect to the Xbox.

All should be OK now.

I've seen a very similar problem in WIN 98/NT/XP before.

This should correct the problem.

Ive had similiar issues... I'm sure this is driving you bananas. Try reflashing your chips BIOS (yes, believe it or not). That could like solve this problem.

If he doesn't know how to change those settings I agree he is not ready to be flashing any chips. However you are mistaken to think that just entering a different string of numbers is going to solve his problem either. Had you read my post you would have realized that what you suggested is something about 20 different users suggested to me when I had the problem, and suprise suprise, it didn't work.

I would listen to Trob on this one not saying the rest don't know what the hell they are talking about but Trob helped me out and I am sure of his experience that  he is right. I run windows xp and all I had to do is change the settings manually just like Trob said and change the gateway or whatever it is to 0.0.0.0 or 1.1.1.1
