Philips Dvd Tweaking Troubles
« on: September 14, 2003, 03:05:00 AM »

Hi @ all,

I just tried to tweak my Philips DVD (Xbox v1.0) to read CD-R and better reading performance for DVD-R. While following the tutorials I tweaked the resistor to approx. 520 Ohms but then the Drive failed to read ANY DVD, even original movies or games.

When restoring the original value of approx. 650Ohms the drive still fails to read DVD. The only readable media is CD-RW at the moment, so I think a recovery to original state should be possible.

And there's where I need some help of someone, who's firm doing such things.

Any ideas how to restore the drive to working condition?  :uhh:

These are two very helpfull replies, arent they.

You two are my heroes.

Anyone with some more technical understanding out there? Well, I actually tweaked more than one PC-Drive in order to better read DVD-R, this always with GREAT results.

But that Philips-Drive seems to have its own mind.

Hi,

to be honest ... not 100% But I made a marker line on it and if the lines fit it's about 650Ohms.

What's your Resistor value? Maybe I turned it accidentially a whole round. :-(
But taking the Tutorial found here the 650Ohms sound right. Well I know there are different Philips-Drives out there, maybe there's a greater difference between the two types?

It would be great to get your help!

Im 98.3% sure that you are screwed, much like myself and the many that have gone before...

There is no way in a million years that a line will be of any help what so ever (guilty as charged, i did the same) they are far too sensitive you really have to have taken the ohmage before you had started, and even if you had.... chances are you have over adjusted it (like me) beyond the point of no return..... there was a thread where people had posted there working values....... but this is of limited help when you know why there are pots there in the first place.

Each drive is different, depending on many factors, such as if brand of resistors is different between batches..... etc, the temprature the day they were manufactured.... etc...etc....etc........ and at the end of the day if the drive does not pass tests then the pots are altered in the factory, so no two drives are quite the same basically.

Personaly i bought a samsung 616T (the other guy above got a 616F, either will work but the T is better, they both come in black but are alot easier to find in white)

Others have bought a xbox samsung drive from ebay.... this works also, i now have a redundant phillips that can read cd-r or cd-rw but no dvd (anyone interested for £10 lol)

So to sum up, i suspect you are screwed but keep trying anyway and good luck.

Hi @ all,

while I did a Step-by-Step-Regulation from 1200Ohms down to 400 in appr. 10 Ohms steps with no positive result in the DVD reading case but massive difference in CD-RW-acceptance I already started looking for a replacement.

The SD-616 are hard to find over here (well, the Q-version is almost anywhere) so I'll be looking for a payable original drive from eBay (there are a load of Thompsons online :-( ).

'till then I think, I'll play the games on my HDD. Too bad I can't push my Originals from the PC to the HDD. I wish I'd made some backups so I could use my PC Drive to read them. I already played with that while downloading Xeon but 'till now I haven't tried it, therefore had no need for PC readable Games :-(

At the moment XBMP is streaming MPEG recorded TV from my PC to the TV, so currently there's no need for a DVD Drive :-)

Well, Thanks.

... sad to hear that. Is it with all F-Types or is this one faulty? I'm currently bidding on eBay for a F-Type which is very cheap due to disc acknowledge problems, which occur from time to time. I think that's a good piece for a little modding practice. But I'm still looking for a E- or T-type until someone verifies hit F-Type working correctly.

Maybe I'll cut a hole in the top cover :-)

Well, let's see. I'll keep you updated.

I'm interested in knowing how it goes.  I always wondered why the quality of dvd players weren't so consistent when it seems like everything else is.  Shorty summed it up pretty well for me.  Thanks.

I was just wondering at what sort of successes and failures people were having when using the ohm measuring tutorial with tweaking th epot on the phillips drive.
I have a 1.3 XBOX with Philips DVD-ROM, is this likely to be the same DVD-ROM as featured in the ohms tutorial?

As most people posted about, it's best to just steer clear of that whole pot tweaking mess, the potention payoff really isn't worth the risk in my opinion.
