Kid Friendly Dashboard
« on: February 16, 2004, 05:37:00 PM »

Hey all, I have 2 kids (7 and 9) and I'm looking for a dash that gives them just a list of games with the games picture next to it. Then have a way for me to bypass the "kid dash" and go directly to my dash of choice.

What are other parents out there doing? Whats the best way to go about this?

Thanks!

i'm not a parent but for the kids mxm would be good. you could put a pic of every game in it and have it start showing all the installed games (or the ones you put in the xml).
then for yourself install another dash.
get x-selector (i think that is what it is called) and install it as dash. in the config file put the dash for the kids first so they just have to press a to get to mxm and for yourself do a second entry with the dash you want.   <

I did this with UnleashX   It works excellent.   Granted that the first level has to be a folder. They can just click once to open the folde and get a list of games to launch.  The rest can be passworded os only you can get access to it.  Here is the content of my unleashX config.xml file.  You will need to change a few of the paths, as I had mine set for all F: partition and different folders, and IP address info. But it should give you the idea.  What you will end up with is a menu like this.

GAMES    < Header that can be selected to open the list of games >
LAUNCH DVD  < Password protected item to launch disc in DVD drive >
SYSTEM    < Password protected item that lists other functions and apps list >

I always use the old neXgen 91.c for kids and people that just want to play games easy and quick. It has practically no options or complicated menus, so it's basically impossible to fuck anything up. In case you haven't tried it, it looks like a hacked MS Dash, the launch menu has a silmilar look to that of the MS Dash GameSave menu. And yes it has a litttle icon pic next to the game.

MXM, UnleashX & Avalaunch can work too. But I've noticed that when kids use this, they sometimes accidently go into other menus and options. A while back my nephew deleted my KawaX folder, and probably some other stuff I still don't know about.

Nothing against any dash, they're all great. But for kids I would definately reccomend neXgen 91.c. neXgen 95 takes a little longer to load, and it has some flash bios thing (don't know if it works, or if it even does anything).

Messing with the Settings, Flashing the BIOS if you have a chip with no write protect features, etc.  wink.gif

You can make the Evox dash very kid friendly.  I have small children also and didn't want them messing with the flash or backup feature either.

Just go into your Evox ini and comment out anything in the ini menu section that you don't want to show up on the main screen with a # sign.

The menu area of my Evox ini:

[Menu]

Section "Root"
{
   Item "Launch DVD",ID_Launch_DVD
   Item "Trainers",ID_trainer
   Item "MS Dashboard",ID_MS_Dash
   Item "Reboot",ID_Quick_Reboot
#   Item "Power Cycle",ID_Full_Reboot
   Item "Power Off",ID_Power_Off
#   Item "Lock Harddisk",@210
#   Item "Unlock Harddisk",@211
   Section "System Utils"
   {
      Item "Settings",ID_Settings
   #   Item "Flash BIOS",ID_Flash_Bios
   #   Item "Backup",ID_Backup
   #   Item "Skins",ID_Skins
   }
   Section  "Launch Menu"
   {
      Section "Games"
      {
         AutoAddItem "e:\games\"
         AutoAddItem "f:\games\"
         SortAll
      }
      Section "Apps"
      {
         AutoAddItem "e:\apps\"
         AutoAddItem "f:\apps\"
         SortAll
      }
   }
}

As you can see, I commented out  the Flash BIOS, Backup and Skins sections.  You could comment out anything that you don't want to show up.  If I need to use those functions, I edit the comments back out and FTP the newly editted ini back to the Evox folder.

J.

I think unleashx is best way to go.  Only dash that can password protect like that and you still even won't need to switch to another dash...
But if you want to switch to avalauch you could even password protect that.  <

What kind of mod do you have?   Why not put 2 dashboards, on for the kids and one for you, on your xbox.  Then, assuming your mod chip has multiple banks, use one bank to boot the kid dashboard, and the other bank for your dashboard?

Just be sure to switch it back to the kid dashboard when you're done.  <

MXM for both, just protect any non-kid safe games with a passcode.
