Unleash X Preview Videos And Icons
« on: September 23, 2004, 08:20:00 PM »

First off, sorry if this question has been stomped into the ground, but I did a search and couldnt find the info I need.

I have the latest version of unleash x, and my question is how do I get preview videos and icons to show up for my menu items (games, emulators, mediaplayers, programs, dashboards) and their respective sub items (eg. under "Emulators" there would be "surreal 64", "Playstation", "Super Nintendo", "Nintendo", "PCEngine", "Scummvmx")?

I got the preview vids working just find for the xbox games themselves but havent been able to figure out the above problem. Any help would be greatly appreciated as I am in the midst of switching from MXM to Unleash x. I have tried naming the icon .jpg I want "icon.jpg" and the preview vid I want "preview.wmv", but that didnt do the trick, so obviously there's something simple I'm missing.

 No wmv works as well as long as it is in Version 8 format.

If you have a highspeed internet connection and you have enabled the Edit menu option in settings you can directly download previews for most games right in the dash.

Just navigate to the game, Press Start, Select Edit, highlight the Preview option, Press Start and select download preview.. If a preview exists at all xbox skins, UnleashX will download and install it for you. There are limits on how many you can download in a day.

I don't mean previews for the games themselves, I mean previews for folders such as "games" and "emulators" etc etc. In MxM for my emulators menu item I have a video playing of mario 64, how can I make that vid play when "emulators" is highlighted in Unleash x, also this "edit menu", I find the option to turn that on in settings, or do I have to change something in one of the xml's.

Hi.   I asked the same question 2 days ago on this forum, and i got help from a swedish bloke who could explain for me how to do it in Swedish for me and now i have a working preview for "Games, Media center, Applications etc etc on the first page in UnleashX.

I will try to explain for you how to do it.

First,  get a movie or make one yourself, save it as wmv8 format. Think u know this allready.  Save it on the Xbox for example on C:\ so you know where u have it.

When u have started your xbox and are standing (highlighted) over the Meny Games, Applications or what meny u whant a preview for,  press the start button and u will get a new meny where u have to choose "Edit Item".

Then u choose the Preview and take the preview movie on C:\.   The movie doesent have to have the name "preview.wmv"  it can be something like "games_meny.wmv"  , "applications_meny.wmv"  and so on.

The preview filename is only for the Games preview.

Ill hope this help.  Sorry about my terrible english.

Good luck  (Cheers to "love_tropicana" who helped me out with this)

 Even though I don't use dialup you can still download the previews through the dash if you are running the dialup through say a switch ;)

Or if you are like myself and have to do everything via command line, you can edit the .xml file quite easily to read any preview video you want like so:

<Menu>
      <Item Action="LaunchDVD" Preview="C:\xboxdvd.wmv">Launch DVD</Item>
      <List Text="Games" Sort="On" Auto="On" Preview="C:\halo.wmv">
         <Path>E:\Games</Path>
         <Path>F:\Games</Path>
         <Path>G:\Games</Path>
         <Path>E:\HDDLoader</Path>
         <Path>F:\HDDLoader</Path>

All you have to do is add the Preview="PATH" command in the actual list/item line.

Okay... I don't think you guys are getting what he's saying  :huh:

For quite some time, I was having the same problem.. until now.. hehe,  I just realized what the problem was.

For the START>Edit Item> (Choose Icon/Preview Video) to work, you have to have Auto="On" for that directory..  not for lines you've manually entered.  For those you typed in yourself, you'll need to manually edit the .xml and add Icon="(DRV)\(DIR)\(filename)"  ie: Even though it will let you edit the manually added line, it will only recall the info for that .xbe out of the items.xml only when that item is called upon by the list's (sub-menu's) Auto="On" tag.  Hmm.. Is this a bug?

Also, another thing while we're on the topic..  the preview videos, any way to set the delay for them.. or have it go straight to the video without an icon before it causing a delay?
(ie: allow ICON only, VIDEO only, or both (as it is right now))

Thanks!

 Yup , that's what I meant. And I think the last couple posts about manually editing the xml may do just the trick. I got all the main menu items to have an icon and a vid, but when I added icons and vids to sub menu items (eg EMULTATORS--> surreal 64 (sub menu item)-->PSX (submenu item) via the "start" "edit" menu commands the icon and vid would dissapear after I restarted/rebooted unleashx. I will try adding in the lines manually to my manually made xml.

Thanks for all the help and tips  :beer:

Hopefully my above paragraph was easy to understand.

Cool, glad we got it figured out.  Having this capability sure make the dash more like an official game loader.  Sorta reminds me of those PSX demo discs now hehe.

Thanks again!  Oh and mucho props to the designers for implimenting the preview capability into unleashx!  It rocks!
