Here's how the xbox works. As you know, you can turn it on with either the eject button or the power button. If you turn it on with the power button, it'll go to the main dash. If you turn it on with the eject button, It'll go through a certain boot order. First it'll look for a default.xbe in the dvd drive (this way you can run XBMC), then it'll look for default.xbe on the hard drive in the E:\ partition. So when you first run it from the DVD, you can then transfer over XBMC to the hard drive, and you can remove the DVD and run XBMC whenever you want by booting with the eject button. So whenever you want to go on XBox live or change the res settings, you can get to the main dash by booting up with the power button.
