SMTP RFC is quite a bit longer though.

I tried build 1219.  It can open connections successfully, but can't seem to read or write to them.  Maybe it isn't done yet, but if it is, then I'm doing something wrong (what that is, I can't imagine)

Well BJ had said in the WIP releases topic, that he had not added the ability to "listen" yet... Not sure if that is what you mean ?  <

While I haven't tested it, the connections stuff should be good to go.

The "Listen" stuff is just for servers, and isn't needed for a client accessing POP3 or SMTP.  <
