Heh heh - took the wife to see it tonight.
I find it hilarious Gore is promoting this as a "warning" - the junk science is completely laughable in it. The character of the VP (supposedly modelled after Cheney) just demonstrates the simple-minded view these guys possess regarding politics and people.
If we believe the film, it really doesn't matter what we do now, because the crap is going to hit the fan. If we don't believe it, it doesn't really matter.
Mankind's industrial age is a blip in the history of the Earth (indeed, so is man's existance). Within a hundred years, our technology will be exponentially as different as it was at the turn of the twentieth century compared to now. No more radio waves (think quantum wormhole communications), extremely efficient electrical power (think superconductors and methods of power generation undreamed of), and a deeper understanding of how our planet handles fluctuations in temperatures, O2/CO2, pollutants. If mankind's activities today do indeed have a real, lasting impact on Earth's biosphere, surely in the near future, we'll also have the means to correct it.
...but the alarmists would rather we spend our existence living in caves.
Anyway, it was a good "popcorn movie" - seeing what happens to L.A., NYC, and the world in general was pretty cool to watch. As with most Emmerich movies (Stargate, ID4), you need to suspend your nitpicking and logical, reasoning brains to enjoy the flick. Plot holes and plausibility lapses big enough to float a Russian super tanker through - but fun nonetheless.
