i'm from alberta, and recently purchased a 120 GB hdd from the states....

transaction went fine. all was good, cost me 109 US.

anyways, i've been using the HDD for about one month, then i got this letter in the mail yesterday stating,
"dear sir, we decided to bum fuck you by taxing you GST on this purchased item as well as ass rape you on brokerage fees for another 25 ddollars.  oh yah, tee hee, forgot to mention we're charging gst on the brokerage fees too.  regards,  FED EX"

now WTF!

i was quite miffed...
was just wondering if any one know how to get around this.

i'm kinda new to buying shit from the US and don't wanna get dinged again.

Cheers,
Nex

i didnt pay it once and they sent it to a credit agency and that is put on your credit report so i suggest to pay it.

if they send it from the states as a gift i believe you dont have to pay anything

So if you buy something from someone in the US, they can put it down as a gift on the customs form, and you won't get charged, or they can put the value of the item under $20 dollars, and that will be customs free as well.
I've ordered so many small items from the US, and the senders always put the item value higher than it really is...Why I don't know.....and I always end up paying customs fees.

Same thing ended up happening to me.. Made a 500 dollar (canadian bucks, thats about 4 dollars us.. =D ) order from ebgames. A month later I get a mail saying they charged me 100 for their taxes and crap ><.

I've bought a ton of stuff off ebay and from other people and I generally dont pay taxes unless the package is over a certain weight. For my xbox I ended up paying 20 bucks, but for a few cds (dreamcast, ps, even sega saturn) games I generally dont pay anything. DVD cases seem to be totally random, while controllers I generally pay 3 bucks or so. =/ It varrys alot though, might just be the way the person decides to ship it.

thnx all very much

i appreciate the fast response, i did decide to pay it since it was something that might halt my further shipments to my place..  rat bastards

aight, so teh trick is just say , "gift"

or under 20 bucks... that way they won't check what's inside right?

The reason for that is for insurance - if the value is declared under $20, and the post office damages/destroys/looses it, you can only get back the declared value...

Yes, I am aware of insurance, but I am talking about just regular, uninsured parcels. The one's where they have to fill out the small green customs sticker, declaring the contents and value.
