Rss Newsfeed Compatibility List
« on: July 15, 2003, 09:35:00 AM »

OK, we all know X-S' newsfeeds, what about others?

Post your links here and experience. The links should be to http server with complete xml files in rss format.

As some sites mangle these format, I have not had time to clean up support - but will in the 0.9n.1 release.

This is Xbox-Scene's RSS newsfeed format:

CODE

title
  :    :

 Item Title
 ...
    :      :

  :   :

Ones in similar format should work great. If the format is different, let me know here!!

Anyone interested in the Most Recent MXM skin listing?

http://www.allxboxskins.com/rssmxm.xml

I can give you guys the thumbnails too if you want them.

Does the format need to be changed, BJ ?

What about some kind of community feed for MXM? I could create a quick page

That format should work fine....

Yeah, I'm sorry I didn't post that  huh.gif  I knew there was a good one I was missing.

Trying to get that php.net feed to work, and I get a "301 Document moved permanently to here" and "here" is a link to the EXACT SAME PLACE I just queried for the file! Yet, IE brings up the XML...... Arrggghhhh.... Gotta love it when web servers throw curveballs at simple clients!

Maybe you could trick the server into thinking MXM is IE? or does the problem lie elsewhere?

I don't know. The protocol is basic "1.0" http - no headers. I may have to handle headers and such, but that will take a while. I'll play with a few other feeds and see what comes up.

Basically, some feeds will be very stubborn, and not work, even if you can read them in IE, thanks to server quirks.

Cool... I plan on expanding support for the different newsfeed fields and ways to display them.

The system is actually capable of handling multiple newsfeeds, too...

BJ:  Awesome dashboard.  It is simply the best.

I've been curious about this RSS feature as I don't know much about it.  How does one integrate the RSS stuff into mxm.xml or menu.xml -- or, is it its own XML file?  Does anyone have a working example?  If this provides what I think it will to my dashboard, that'd be awesome. smile.gif

Any help / documentation would be greatly appreciated.  I've checked the docs that bundle with MXM and have had no luck finding info.

Thanks everyone. smile.gif

It's detailed a bit in the ReadMe.txt:

QUOTE

* Some Newsfeed capability...
  Add a Newsfeed node into the Config node of MXM.xml:
  <Config>
    :   :
   <Newsfeed name="user">
    <Global>True</Global>
    <RotateChannels>False</RotateChannels>
    <URL>http://www.xbox-scen...scene.xml</URL>
    <UpdateIntervalMin>28</UpdateIntervalMin>
    <RotateItemInterval>10</RotateItemInterval>
   </Newsfeed>
    :   :
  </Config>
  Access it with a text source of "newsfeed"
  The user MUST have a proper DNS defined, otherwise, they have to use the dotted 'numeric' IP for the server.

Skins need to have a Text Element with source of "newsfeed" which will cycle between Titles in the supplied newsfeed(s). It will support more than one newsfeed, BTW.

I will make it much more flexible when it gets enough testing, and is relatively solid.

well, not sure about rdf .. i know X-S's RSS feed is compatible with the RDF plugin in trillian, so maybe an RSS reader will be able to read RDF.

I did a little shuffling, and it SHOULD be able to read that newsfeed... try it and see, I will do some more testing just before I release n.2

Thanks!  Got it working, but I have one oustanding issue (and I'm sure it's easy to solve):

Currenlty I am using xbins.org/xbins.xml as my news feed and I can't get the news item to rotate to the next item.  Here's the MXM.XML settings:

QUOTE

<Newsfeed name="newsfeed">
    <Global>True</Global>
    <RotateChannels>True</RotateChannels>
    <URL>http://xbins.org/xbins.xml</URL>
    <UpdateIntervalMin>28</UpdateIntervalMin>
    <RotateItemInterval>1</RotateItemInterval>
</Newsfeed>

I would think that RotateItemInterval would be the value to switch the visible news item...?

Sorry to bother -- thanks for the help. :)
