To reply to a few e-mail I received:

I would prefer NOT to mod ver 1-4 PS2's. The biggest reason for this is that I have noticed about 1 in 4 PS2's that are ver 1-4 have problems reading DVD-R's.

Considering new units are $179.00 and you can sell an old PS2 for $130ish on Ebay, I would just suggest selling the old unit and buying a new one.
