Final Guide To Choose A New Hd
« on: January 31, 2003, 12:42:00 AM »

according to some posts if you want to upgrade to a new (bigger) hardisk

GOOD IDEA
- use a seagate, or a maxtor
- choose a 5400 rpm one is normally less hot than a 7200
- take a look at the heat reviews on the web
- Samsung 120Gb 5400 is a very good drive
- Western Digital  with a  SMALL cache a good too.
- 80Gb Maxtor 7200 runs fine
- 80gb Seagate 7200 runs fine

BAD IDEA
- The WD drives with a LARGE cache sometime will not lock
- some Maxtor run very hot, even the 5400's, be carefull !!!
- some 7200 have heating issue.

Can you post your personal experience.

thanks in advance

The WD drives with a large cache sometime will not lock. STAY AWAY from Maxtor they run very hot, even the 5400's, take a look at the heat reviews on the web

If you can get your hands on a Samsung 120Gb 5400 you would have a very good drive. If not though go with Western Digital but with a small cache.

I have a 7200 drive in my xbox and have had no issues with heat at all!

To be honest it was a bit harsh of me to say STAY AWAY from maxtors. I just wanted to make the point that Maxtor Drives run significantly hotter than other drives in there class.

Personally I dont think there will be an issue with heat anyway but I know others take the heat problem very seriously. Maxtor would be my last choice in any case.

Not really got a cat is hells chance of getting a 5400 120GB seagate anywhere these days. Search the net though.

The Samsung 120GB 5400 drives are the easiest to get hold of

Most all Western Digital SE drives with the large cache WILL lock if they are retail drives.  The OEM WD drives (Specifically the ones many people bought very inexpensively from Dell) will not.

WD Special Edition hard drives work great in the Xbox.  They are extremely fast and run cool for a 7200 rpm drive.

I have used 3 WD 1200JB 7200rpm SE drives.  2 of them were retail boxed and locked perfectly.  The Dell OEM doesn't lock but in all honesty that doesn't really bother me because without Evox and XBMP2 my Xbox just isn't worth using.
