Can't Lock Retail Hard Drive, No Eeprom.bin. :(

As far as messing up goes, you could have done a lot worse. This is fixable without too much hassle. Since your hard drive is unlocked its just a matter of extracting the eeprom and copying it elsewhere so it can be used to lock your upgraded hard drive. Just connect the stock hard drive to your computer and use the program "Xplorer360" to navigate the hard drive. Look around for wherever you backed up your eeprom to. If you used an installer of some sorts, chances are you'll find a eeprom.bin file somewhere on the E drive. Extract the eeprom to somewhere on your computer, then copy it into your HDD locking choice (XboxHDM or whatever you chose to use), continue on locking your upgraded hdd with the recovered eeprom and thats about it.

The main problem with that method is that it relies on a backup of the EEPROM being on the drive. If one was never stored there, then it won't be there to find.

The only other options to get the system booting again are the modchip or the EEPROM reader.

Im thinking your best bet might be to use a mod chip....

This is why I keep my xbox eeprom on a floppy disk, PC hard disk, xbox hard disk and in my email.

Never know when you might need it and need it badly too.

I can't help much besides saying mod chipping it might help?

Thanks guys for the quick replies.  As for my eeprom.bin on the hard drive.  That was the first thing I checked for, but no luck.  I thought I did a backup when I was having problems with my retail hard drive a couple months ago.  I believe I really did mess up this time around.  It's been stressing me out all night, trying to see if there is some type of way to get the HDD key from my Xbox.  I thought installing something on the hard drive and booting the system would change.  But I know that the drive has to be locked, or I'm getting no where.  I'm not really sure what to do now.  I've never had to go with a mod chip, always softmodding.  Not sure what easy solution there is, that won't cost too much.

I thank you guys for the quick replies, I didn't know where to get some help... and fast! smile.gif

Damn, sorry to hear that. Looks like its not as easy as it seemed then. Its like getting locked out of your car. Its easy to do and a bitch to undo.

Use a modchip or eeprom reader as others have said

happy modding

If you've soldiered before you should be okay. Just take your time and do GOOD research don't rush it. You'll find a way to mod it and make it work mate. Don't feel down or like the battle is over... it's just begun and I know youll be back posting your experience on how you fixed it.

All the best.

You can find ready made eeprom readers on eBay from time to time - like this one.

Any retail store, like Radio Shack or others that would be low costing for what I need.  If this is easier and less money to do, I'll do this.  I just want to get my Xbox up and running.  Last, if you want me to, since I'm interested in this, should I post on your thread?

Recycling parts will reduce cost. This post in the thread shows the connections on a typical breadboard. Found another diagram which uses alternative diodes. You can post the details in your thread.

Sorry for the late reply guys.  Well, I feel like an idiot.  I took a couple of days of thinking, and thinking hard.  I kept thinking that I had a backup of the eeprom.bin on my original system hard drive.  But I just didn't know exactly where it would be, if I did have it.  Come to find out, I checked this one site through Google.  Seems some applications will save a backup in the UDATA folder.  But I have so many folders in the UDATA.  So I used Xplorer360 to look at my hard drive.

LOL, come to find out it was in the first folder of the UDATA folder.  But, there were two more folders inside, I didn't know that.  I thought it would show up quickly after accessing one folder.  It was in a folder titled "backup".  There were 5 files in there, including eeprom.bin.  I made three backups of that folder. wink.gif So I did have it, thank god!  I've taken a couple more days getting my new hard drive prepared and filling it up.  I want to thank you guys furthermore for helping.  You've all been very kind and understanding of my situation.  It's good to have my good ol' Xbox back!  It's my first Xbox from a couple of months after launch, and I want to keep it that way. smile.gif
