To all who think of anyone downloading a game as a pirate. MS and game developers spend as much as $10-20 million dollars on creating a game. Well, with appx 6-7 million xbox 360's sold, and the average game going for $50, with an estimate of 2-3 games bought by each 360 owner, thats about $1 BILLION dollars sales.
Now, if games were resonably priced at under $20, the amount of pirating would go down, as most would buy any game they wanted without fear of having a $50 game that not only sucks but can be finished in less than ten hours. At that rate, we'll estimate each 360 owner buying 8-10 games. Guess what, they would make the SAME or MORE in sales. Now, you tell me, who's ripping off who?
Just to stir the pot...bets are on that 8 out of 10 who say they don't pirate....DO! Just like most people deny looking at porn on the net, majority is lying. jester.gif

Then complain to the publishers. You think you have got it bad, try 17.5% Tax in the UK. I'm sure it's not the devs that charge this much, just the publishers and licence fees.

Many people see hacked firmware as a way to pirate games. What people don't often consider is the fact that hacked firmware can be used as a backup. Backup copies of games are life savers. When a  game get's scratched , there is nothing you can do. But if you have a backup biggrin.gif , your good.

Not worth losing XBL... definitelly. Going to wait until the patching process is bug free.
Plus EBGames are cheap on games, if you visit them regulary.
Got today Lara Croft (new) for 20bucks.
I got it for the price, not that I like it a lot. smile.gif

Piracy is a way of complaining. It's also a scapegoat for companies when they make crappy overpriced games. Just like the RIAA and MPAA. Loss of money makes ears listen.
As for the UK tax, you got that lovely little devil on the throne to thank for that. In America, he sits in the oval office.

Are you referring to the Queen or the Cheshire Cat that is Blair?  tongue.gif

I see lots of replies that say "I haven't modded my 360 because I don't want to lose xbox live"  tongue.gif don't worry; you won't. I'm pretty sure NO ONE has been automatically detected and banned from using pirated games. And if and when they are able to ban people (fall update anyone?), you will just have to come to this site to find out.

Piracy + xbox live = a dream come true

I have 5 XBox 360's connected up to my network that behave as Media Center Extenders. I upgraded the firmware on these units to allow my to make backups of the games I purchased so my kids could play games at anyone of the 5 systems I have. Is this wrong? I don't think so. You can imagine what 4 kids can do to the orignals!! Maybe I am in the minority but I don't feel that I have done anything wrong. It would be different if the game manufacturers would replace a game DVD at no cost if it was damaged but since they don't I feel it is up to me to create a backup of my media to insure it lasts.

Erm, well you are a special case I think.

I enjoy xbox live with my friends. When there's a true mod and homebrew comes around then I'll buy a second one to mod.

In order to recoup the costs of making a game, advertising it, etc., you need to sell enough copies of said game to do so, right?  Now as you stated in your post, game developers tend to spend $10+ million on development.  At $50 a pop, they need to sell 200,000+ copies of a game to break even.  As it stands, this isn't an easy task for most titles, because out of the hundreds of games released for a console, a relatively small fraction of them actually break past that mark enough to garner much of a profit.  As you may also be aware, the quality of the game doesn't necessarily determine the amount of copies it'll sell either.

However, you feel that games should be under $20, so not even half of the current average.  Should a publisher choose to set such a price, they'd need over 400,000+ copies to break even now, which pretty much goes into Platinum/Greatest Hits territory for the current consoles.  Now if you've ever taken a basic Economics course, you'd be familiar with the idea of revenue.  Basically, there is a point where if you make prices low enough, while you may garner higher sales overall, you would end up with lower revenue.  So the fact that all the current publishers price games around $50 isn't much of a coincidence, nor did they pull a random number out of their ass and decide this would be the standard price.

All the economics mumbo jumbo aside, most games tend to drop in price rather quickly as they saturate the market.  Especially in the PS2 generation, as there aren't as many "rare" games nowadays and as such, you can usually find them in a bargain bin at half price anyway...which leads up to my opinoin that companies could price games for a penny and there'd still be people too cheap to pay for them.

But i still get the guy's point!

I live close to an Indian Reserve where Cigarettes can be bought for cheaper than in a dep or convinience store. its called contreband, back a few years the gouverment brought down prices of cigarettes to fight off contreband! did it work ? maybe not to their expectations, but it changed the way Indians sell cigarettes, they make their own now!

So yes, droppin prices would help piracy, im living proof...

just trowin that in.

For economics my friend, all you have to do is look at Walmart. Proof that when you sell a crap load of stuff lower than anyone else, you make billions. And with the CEO making an estimated $17 million dollars a year, selling cheap is paying off.
You think people aren't looking for cheaper prices. Just go stand out in front of Wally world the day after Thanksgiving.
Thereby, my point is that by game developers lowering their prices with hopes of it selling like hotcakes, their games may not be pirated AS much. We all know piracy will never totally end.
As for the game developers "breaking even", well you said it, most games don't have platinum status. But word of mouth spreads quick. An average rated game would look more appealing under $20, as opposed to nearly three times that amount. Gamers make or break a title. More accessible(lower priced) good games make developers more than their fair share. As for the crappy games, well all I can say is make better games and you won't lose money. If it's bad, no one will want to pirate it anyway.
I can say without a doubt that I personally would buy(gladly) 3 games at $20 each a helluva lot faster than 1 at $60. That's economics for ya.
