MS/Nintendo/PS3
I don't know where the supposed speculation on the PS3 price is coming from, they have confirmed that the "base" model is $499 and the "premium" model is $599. Yes Sony will sell it for that much, they got people to pay $299 for a portable... not for long but they made a nice profit for awhile. It was stated in numerous publications (EGM comes to mind) that MS loses $76 on every premium console sold. With Blu-Ray and the Cell processor and other various tech included in the PS3, I have a feeling that number is going to be a bit higher for Sony, even at the steep price points they have set. 1080p is not a reason to buy a game system, sorry. Everyone has to have a giant e-penis on all of the gaming forums lately. I thought you purchased a game system to play games, maybe thats just me. I started playing games on the Atari 7800, which was out before alot of you were even born. There were no amazing CGI movies, or flashy effects, the game was either fun or it wasn't. It connected to the TV with an RF adapter for God sakes. This is how Sony has made a living in this buisness, they have realized that most gamers aren't really gamers at all, they just want what is precieved to be bigger and better than what everyone else has. My favorite game on PS2 is Katamari Damacy. No amazing graphics there, it looked mostly like an old N64 of PS One game, but it is fun to play, and provides a different experience than most games, which are mainly FPS. I love a good FPS, but there are other games out there. In terms of sales, I think the Wii could easily surpass both PS3 and 360 combined if people would get over themselves, and not worry about whats cool, but whats fun. The Wii is going to be a great system, with great first party support (the norm for Nintendo systems) and with Ubisoft and other great developers on board, the thrid party is looking better than ever. It really suprised me to see developers taking games like Tony Hawk in different directions to support the Wii, rather than just use the "traditional" controller scheme and port the game from the other 2 systems. However, Microsoft has a plan with the 360, they are integrating it into Vista basically, which should make for some great new abilities, like game modding and level designing, much like a PC game experience, but probably alot more streamlined and accessible. With Windows Live, it will also add a bunch of people to the community, which is always good for online gaming, and the ocassional rivalry against PC users on cross platformed games. The HD DVD add-on was also a smart idea, because not everyone uses their game system for movie viewing, so if you want to stay strictly games, you don't have to have HD DVD. It also leaves the option for (gasp) Blu-Ray, if that becomes the popular format and HD DVD dies out (which I highly doubt). All in all, Sony has dug themselves a very deep hole, no Euro launch, only 400,000 systems at launch for the US (they promise 1.2 million by the new year, but knowing Sony's track record, I wouldn't count on it), and I am sure there will be defective units all over the place, since they are having trouble as of now getting the systems up and running. Don't knock MS, a year's time has given them a nice library of games (with great ones coming), and they have gotten all the kinks worked of production so that, although they are coming a bit slower than most would like, the systems are stable and no one is having too much trouble with them anymore.
