Need Helping Fixing Analog Stick On My Controller
« on: June 08, 2010, 03:58:00 PM »

i recently have been having trouble with the left analog stick on my controller-s
it seems when i push right on it in a certain spot it doesn't "go" all the way.

what i mean is,  in an adventure/platformer type game, when i try to run right the character will walk instead of run.
most 2d emulator games are fine, it's just games that are "movement sensitive" if you guys know what i'm talking about.

also, when i try and jiggle the stick, and then click it in, the stick will actually get stuck in the right position. when it gets stuck though it seems like the right direction works again.

i hope you guys understand what i'm trying to say, it's kinda hard to explain. i was just thinking about buying another controller, but i'm not sure it's broken or maybe just dirty underneath the stick or something.

any advice?

My controller (a Duke) does something similar - when left in the center position, it decides I'm pushing that left stick ever so slightly to the right. Clicking in the stick fixes it completely, but only until I start another game or reboot or something.

My bet is clicking the stick causes the system to recalibrate it. Note that the console has to calibrate the sticks every time you turn it on, or when you plug in new controllers. Odds are the real problem is that the springs that recenter the sticks are getting old and stretched, causing the initial calibration to be slightly off.

Though come to think of it, a little grit under the stick is probably more likely.

what you describes happens to me sometimes. i usually fix it by rapidly jerking the stick in a circular motion several times and it'll stop. although that's probably not good for it.

but my problem is, when i push the stick all the way to the right, it doesn't detect that i'm pushing it all the way to the right, it only detects that i'm pushing it a little bit. that's why in some video games when i'm going left it runs but when i try and go right it walks as if i was only slightly moving stick, although i'm moving the stick all the way. and i meant that the stick literally gets stuck facing right, it doesn't seem like it's doing that now though.

if there is stuff under there i'm wondering if there's a way to clean it out.
and to make it harder, i can't really take it apart. i have about 3 inches of electrical tape wrapped the entire thing.
this control looks like it's been to hell and back but i've been using it fine for about 3 years, i would prefer to try and get it working but if it comes down to it i guess i'll have to buy a new one especially if you say the springs are probably getting old and stretching.

There's no way you'll be able to fix it via software methods - you'll have to open the controller to have any hope of fixing it, that much is for certain. I would advise opening the stick's housing box thingy and blowing it out with compressed air or something.

By the way, have you still got those missing PCSXbox compatibility entries?

having to take it apart is what i was afraid of, if you saw this thing it's basically hanging on by a thread with tape. it probably would be easier to just buy a new one, but maybe i can use some compressed air and see if i can clean it out from the front.
anyway, thanks for the advice.

also, i'm sorry it took so long for the pscxbox thing, i completely forgot about it, i've been pretty busy.
i'll send you a pm with the missing stuff.
