FTP doesn't go over your internet connection - it goes directly from your PC to the Xbox via your home switch/router.

The adapter you are buying should allow you to plug any USB device into your Xbox, including memory sticks. However, for memory sticks they have to be FATX or FAT 16/32 formatted, and 4GB or less in size, and not all memory sticks work. Also, the connection is USB 1.1 only, so it's not brilliantly quick.
