examination of the inside of the controller confirmed my original belief that some cutting will be required to make the hardware fit.  the 9v battery almost fits in the space occupied by the large rumble motor.  it appears that i might be able to fit it there if i remove some of the mounting structure with a dremel.

there is not too much that can be done by cutting the pwb since all of the buttons, including the d-pad, are screened on.  i'm thinking of taking the space from the memory modules.  there is a huge volume just waiting to be occupied by the 20kv electonics.  smile.gif

i'm going to look into a solid state relay, rzyzzy, and also the possibility of substituting another xformer.  as i mentioned in a previous post, the one that ships with the kit is huge.  unfortunately, there are no specs on the component or on the schematic included with the kit.  i'll have to do a little homework first.
