Put In Sticky In Certain Forums Hardware, Noob Etc
« on: September 29, 2005, 09:21:00 PM »

should be sticked because people see the commercial then they think wow cool maybe i can use this for my xbox.  Well maybe if it was sticked people would post less about it.  like sticky it in noob forum, hardware forum and anywhere soldering would be discussed.  seems its asked about all the time, so maybe a post on it about why it sucks in the sticky would help.

Making a whole topic on "OMG! DON'T USE COLDHEAT SOLDERING IRONS!!" would seem very pointless.

well in the case modding section there is like 1 or 2 new threads everyweek about it and then a bunch of people post and flame away at the person who posted it.

People are trying to solder with it?  Doesn't it just melt a solder blob?  Do they think that they can solder with it?

no people ask if they can use it to solder modchips and such, but they might fuck their board up.

Cold Heats suck ass. Just looking at that split tip on it will tell you it's not meant for working on an xbox. Try soldering a D0 with that split tip.... won't happen.

Just kidding, I use a super fine soldering iron that can adjust temperature.

Why would we make a sticky saying that, if they screw up their board and dont search for all these topics you hate so much, then thats their problem.

PM brahm2 and request that he add it to the stickied FAQ (if it's not already there)..

If people don't want to read the stickies or search then it's their own damn fault. There are millions of possible "don't be stupid" stickies you could put up in the hardware modding forums, best to put it all in one place (the FAQ) and if they don't read it they probably weren't going to read the dedicated sticky anyway.

The Cold Head isn't an Iron... an Iron gets hot the Cold Heat Sends an electric arc across the tips and through the solder between the tips to superheat it in a matter of milliseconds. I bought one, it's great for soldering stuff in my car, because it's battery operated, but for doing board work, or chip installs it's far too big to be useful, not to mention you risk damaging your parts from the electric charge used to melt the solder.

I don't understand why people just don't buy the 15Watt Fine tip pencil from Radio Shack... $8 USD and one of the best irons you can buy for hobby/modding. Super fine tip small enough mod a PS2, low wattage makes it difficult to accidentally lift traces, Grounded so you can't accidentally shock anything, and it comes with a holder and a sponge... It's all the beginner modder needs.
