un-hardmodded XBOX will not read CD-R media nor boot custom DVD-Rs - so you'll need a PC
You seem to be implying (here and in another post) that softmodded Xboxes won't read homebrew discs, but they will. Completely unmodded Xboxes won't but that's only to be expected. Not that it matters in this context, because if you are upgrading the disk with xboxhdm then you don't need the Xbox to read any discs - you do all the work on the PC. However, there are other softmodded Xbox hard disk upgrade methods that you can do just with your Xbox (chimp and lxhdm), and you can use homebrew DVD-R for those.

xboxHDM requires C drive files - I used KingRoach's NDURE 3.0 but you can use EvoX or something else.
Kingroach NDURE 3.1 is the latest version, and has been for 3 years. More importantly, you can't use "Evox or something else", because Evox isn't a softmod, it's a dash. You have to use Kingroach (or another font exploit softmod) along with a clean stock C dash to build a new, clean disk.

You also fail to mention that if any of the partitions on the new disk are larger than 256GB you will need to reformat them using XBPartitioner 1.1 and check the cluster size (must be 32k for 256GB-512GB, 64k for 512GB-1024GB) before starting to use the new disk.

No - a previously softmodded Xbox needs its hard disk in place in order to boot, because the softmod is on the hard disk. That's why lxhdm and chimp both involve booting the Xbox with the original disk in-place, before building the new hard disk using software on a homebrew DVD-R.

If your attempts to boot from a homebrew disc happened when the original hard disk was disconnected then that's your reason. If not, then it's your DVD drive, media, your burner (hardware and software), or the image you are burning that's the problem.

Ah, I thought so, about the softmod being on the HDD rather than somewhere flashed on some PROM. Yes, I should change my 1st original posting to mention "cannot boot any custom media if softmod HDD is removed - and one doesn't really want to do the hotswap again". My softmod method was using NDURE's hotswap and that was hard work I'd never want to do another hotswap again.
