Hd Upgrade On Softmodded Xbox Won't Boot

Hi,

I'm trying to upgrade the HD from my softmodded xbox, it's a 1.6 .

I use the xboxHDM 1.9 method, using one of many tutorials, it all works fine, and I'm pretty sure I have done it the right way.

When I put the HD in my xbox, it won't boot from it, the light turns orange, and the HD starts making strange write noises.
Any ideas?

I don't know about the strange noises but orange LED is a good sign. What's on the screen?

Is the hard drive clicking? Did you lock it?

If I were to guess, the console can read the hard drive, as well as the softmod that's on it.

However, the softmod can't find a dashboard to load (you either didn't include one, or you put it in the wrong place), and so it sits on a blank screen after the initial boot process is completed.

I dunno, that likely depends on how you did the "cloning".

Try booting Frosty's disc.

Have you tried booting from a disc? I can't remember if that works or not (sorry it's been a while), but if you can boot boXplorer or really anything with a file manager, then you can just install XBMC or UnleashX, etc as your dash. If you can load Auto Installer Deluxe or something, then you're really in good shape.

It's a softmod XBOX, and if the new HDD doesn't boot properly then he won't be able to boot any DVD-R or CD-RWs...
Sorry, but that's simply not true. The LED is orange, so the softmod is working, so the Xbox will happily boot homebrew discs so long as the DVD drive isn't faulty. Like all Xboxes it is far more likely to boot DVD-R than any other media type, and in general the Xbox performs poorly with all -RW media, so DVD-R is the way to go. It sounds as though the problem is to do with missing or corrupted dash files on E:\, which can easily be fixed by booting with any rescue disc and using FTP to replace the missing / faulty files.

Having said that, there is still a possibility that the hard drive itself is faulty, but missing or corrupt dash files is far more likely given the other symptoms.

I was indeed able to boot from a dvd, after that it's easy to reinstall and transfer all my stuff.
