Frustration With The Scene
« on: March 18, 2004, 04:00:00 PM »

Alright, I have to get this off my chest. I've been here for a few months now, and I've been happy finding out all this crazy new stuff about modding the XBox's case and hardware components. But lately, I feel angry, disappointed, and appaled at some of the crap going on here. I don't mean crap as in mods, we're seeing some great things happening! I'm talking about the people, the members of X-S, more specifically the people who post in this section, the XBox Case/Hardware modding zone. I've feel sick and tired of people asking about how to position the "plexi" or "glass" windows, what type of paint to buy, etc. The list goes on and on. Now I understand completely that people are naturally going to come in here after Google-ing "xbox mods" and post a topic without thinking... it's pretty much unavoidable. Nonetheless, I feel like something can or should be done! I don't know what, but I welcome anyone who can type in full sentences and spell correctly to offer their piece of mind here without "trashing" any specific members. Brahm, we need your opinions as well, as I'm sure you've noticed this type of on-going unawareness of knowledge regarding new/slightly experienced members.

Slightly off topic, Brahm I'm not sure how this works or whether you need help or not, but I'd love to help moderate. I can put bias aside for the job, of course. If there's nothing else to be done here that you can't handle, I think this topic should still be a place to brainstorm what to do about unnecessary topics. Opinions?

EDIT: I realize this topic may be in the wrong place, but it deals directly with the Case/Hardware modding forum, as this is the place where I always post, and it is where I'm finding frustration.

I was just thinking about posting a topic just like this. I haven't been here for that long, but I think the time I have spent here has been well spent. I have learned everything I can from xbox-scene good and proper. I have learned not only of xbox-specific stuff but pretty much the whole world of case modding, circuitry, and understanding electronics. But as I see more and more, there is a lack of substance here on the boards.

I have one friend who offered me 50 dollars to paint his xbox for him because there wasn't a good tutorial for it. He's installed dongle LEDs but still doesn't know what red wires are or black wires, or what a power and ground is. People rely on tutorials too much and don't learn on their own.

Another thing is people post too much stating an idea they think, just to ask if anybody has done it before, or just state it to brag. I mean, if you want to get ideas or criticism thats one thing, but please, I would STRONGLY advise people to finish ideas first before flooding the forums. A question here or there I think is fine, but atleast check the FAQ first.

That brings me to a point of possible improvement. The FAQ I think is great, but it could stand to improve a little. Ofcourse this is a general FAQ and I think maybe we should have a extended FAQ which features every tutorial ever created on the case modding forum with a killer index. It could be a community effort, one person start the thread cough::Brahm::cough and then everyone else just post and the starter will edit and add everyones posts in. And then of course, we should try to force poeple to read the FAQ qhich might be a little tricky.

But jeez, look at the page of threads right here, you'll find 2 or 3 threads per page with any substance. The forums aren't badd at all, there is still tons of great stuff happening here, but they could stand to be improves a little. Maybe people will get a deep understanding a developing a love for ALL that is case modding.

I think when you leave the forums, you should not only have a passion to case mod, but to mod everything. Gain some knowledge.

P.S. Nice 500th post mastercheef.

I'm with it all the way, people just get flamed for posting stuff like that, and some are just common sense, you shouldn't rely on tutorials and forums for everything, trial and error and be creative

Thanks spicymeatball, and thanks to you other guys who took the time to post your opinions. This issue has been bothering me for about two weeks now. Sometimes I even think about it while I'm eating or in class. When frustration from a favorite forum begins to invade your everyday life, you need to do something about it. happy.gif

I would like to see xbox-scene cleaned up but the fact of the matter is that it' beerchug.gif s nearly impossible..  There just are way too many posts going on right now and I am sure that the moderators are trying there best to clean up and do what they have to do on top of there day to day duties..  It really is hard to keep up a great forum on top of your other stuff.  I give them all the credit they deserve and you should to.  I dont know if the moderators need some more help to filter out the garbage but who is to say that certain stuff is garbage..  Some people would love to play the role of god and judge who posts and who doesn't so that is another problem.. No doubt people who get rejected with their post will be filling the forum with even more junk, complaining why they got removed or what not..  So I guess the moral of the thing is that people need to read the facts and use the, "SEARCH" button and there answers will most likely be answered...  Keep up the great work mods and to everybody else hang in there.  Things will happen when they happen..

Mastercheef, I whole heartedly agree with you.  I'd be more than willing to bet that 40% of all the posts in this forum are all topics that have been discussed time and time again, and that's being conservative.  Another thing that disappoints me are the teaser posts that some people post.  I can't help but think that all of these topics are just for a raised post count.

"Use search" has been cliched a LONG time ago, but that doesn't mean it doesn't hold meaning.  For god's sakes people, please use the search.  Why should people who have better things to do do your dirty work?

Also, enough with flaming.  It serves no purpose but to cause trouble, and it truly does make this forum look less respectable to guests.  I also highly doubt gratuitous use of f*uck or sh*t is really necessary.  In short this forum, meaning some of its active members, needs to grow up.

Just a word CyberPunk, don't post in this thread, if you don'[t have anything to contribute, don't be an ass plain and simple. Nobody wants you to be an ass, and theres no need for it on the forums. If you disagree, thats fine, just don't post here.

OHHH BURN! But seriosly cyber quit flaming. I have to say this shit about "is krylon fusion good" "krylon fusion blah blah blah" "is X brand better than KRYLON FUCKING FUSION" has to stop. I get tired of seing KRYLON FUSION in every goddamn topic I see. Hey Im gonna be original and paint my xbox, lets see KRYLONM FUSION is what everyone else uses so I guess ill use it too, while Im at it ill copy colours. thats not original at all. do something like put it in a pc case and make it look good. Put it in a custom built case. Do something besides paint it and besides slapping some stickers on it. Do something besides put some cheap easy lights in it. AND FOR CHRISTS SAKE QUIT POSTING EVERY FUKING TOPIC with the works KRYLON FUCKING FUSION in it. If people would quit doin that it would be alot better. Ask questions but dont do it before a search. Do something original and then post pics. Dont litter with stupid shit asking what paint to use, where to get lights, what colour people like, and just do something original. Nobody wants to see your "custom" xbox paint job becuase it has been done. Do cholourmealeon or something. Almost every case is blue and white. thats fine but not everyone needs to see ANOTHER blue and white case.

Just letting off steam. I think mastercheef or however you spell it would be a good respectfull mod.

To xboxmodderr4u and polyesterjones, I agree with you. I know that there may be nothing that can be done at all - that sometimes the only way to find something out is to ask. But I've been brushing aside my frustration for some time now, and just needed to post, whether it changes anything or not. I do know that people are looking at this topic and some of you are posting. Hopefully everyone who reads will be a little more aware of how and when to respond to certain types of issues.

this topic is stupid!  forums are for asking questions, bragging and comparing experiences.  Who cares if someone would rather ask a question rather than search.  there have been many times that i took tons of time researching, preparing and doing a mod or setting up a program, just to find out that there is a better program or faster method than i used.  if people are letting forum comments bother you while you are sleeping or in class, then i feel sorry for these people.  maybe, you need to get a girlfriend rather than a xbox.  if forum posts are interfering with your life than you need to seek help for your problems.  you are an addict.  next time you need to mod something, just stop.  dont do it.  take the money and go to the strip club instead, get a hooker, buy a porno.  good luck in your life, you sad, sad person.

rolleyes.gif

perhapse if it were at the bottom of the hardware forums list it would cut a lot of the crap out.

another idea would be to add a script that promps requires users to search before they post for the first 10 or so posts of their account. sure it'd be annoying but it'd only be for the first 10 posts and it's get the new memebers in the habbit of searching first, and realizing how usefull the search tool actually is. (though it doesn't help that they turn the search engine off during heavy traffic periods)

just a few thoughts to add to the discussion.  pop.gif

Ah, twisted. Great suggestions - moving the link to this forum way down on the list would probably help greatly. The searching script would probably work as well, but wouldn't that require the makers of the Invision Power Board to recode some parts of the forum?
