Piracy?

I am not a pirate; I do not have any games/movies that I haven’t legally obtained on my Xbox (or PC for that matter, save perhaps a few SNES ROMS)). The reason I installed a modchip into my Xbox was for one of these “media centers” that we were all “planning on buying in a few years”. Also, the idea of running Linux, and emulators made it too much to resist.

Oh!?  So your the one.  I'm sure your well aware of this, but if the only people who purchased mod chips were people like you, M$ wouldn't have any problem with it.  You still bought the xbox, and you still buy the games.  The fact is, most people buy modchips to get free games.   Your either A.> Delusional  or B.> Retarded if you think this is not the case.   That being said I completely agree with the policy of no piracy talk.  Not only does it put you in danger, we all run the risk of loseing this fine website (and forums).

Your absolutly right but this shit has to come to an end. Information Technology crimes I keep reading about in the newspaper are nothing yet these kids are getting like 15,20 years. To hell with that. If you can get put in prison for knowing how to use a computer or playing a video game then I hope someone will nuke this place soon because thats a world I refuse to stay in.

Zero while I suspect that your age may be the limiting factor in your comprehension of the "grand scheme of things"  I will humor you.    The fact of the matter is, these "kids" that you speak of can cost companies millions of dollars in lost revenue.     And to make it worse the "kids" outnumber the security experts 2:1.   While I would like to see your source(which newspaper, what story)  on some kid getting 15-20 years in prison,  those who get caught will be made examples of.  Its the only thing corporations and the US Governemnt can do.

That's an apt nickname you got there, Zer0. If everybody thought like you do, there wouldn't be any games at all since nobody would be able to sell them, nor develop them, nor pay programmers, or anyone else. That would, in effect, kill the business completely.

You think games are some sort of fundamental human right?

Let me guess, you're 12? No? Quit acting like it then.

#1 Taco - your replies were worth the 15min, of my life that are now gone.   My favorite was the 800 number.  It reminded me of

Homer Spimpson - "Your theory is intriguing and I would like to subscribe to your newsletter"

Quite a comliment, I thank you. biggrin.gif

if ten or more scene members report a newbie that is blatantly in breach of ettiquete. Then that member's account will be banned from the scene.

My report has got you to 8 .

What do you Mod's think of my idea ? I've tried it twice and both times the offending Newbie bought it . Maybe they should get baned for a week or something ? There seems to be more an more Newbies runing around flaming people just to get a post count. I know this is true because when their post count is threatened they calm way down .

What "Ideas?" The idea of turning X-S into a piracy board to fulfill some desire on your part to post illegal information?

Like I said, take that to IsoNews, if you need to unload that badly.

When you need to take a piss, you use a toilet, not a drinking fountain. Your "idea" seems to be that pissing in the drinking fountain should be OK, and anybody who disagrees is wrong.

Piracy? you know I really like this forum and most people on it but I have got to say this. I understand in a sense why alot of you throw a fit when people start talking about piracy because its "illegal" and "morally wrong" and whatever but I think its time to stop!!! Who the hell cares?? You really think someone gives a shit about a kid rippin a game when theres cokeheads killin people for money down the street?? Hell no. you know if we really wanted to have fun on this board why dont we come up with a secret code for pirated copies and distribute?? I will host 300 gb at least........ Just remember this shit started free and should stay that way......

I dont understand your problem.  Here is what your wrote on your opening statement.  Aside from a few flames (which where pretty funny biggrin.gif  )   How are we misunderstanding you?
Looks like most of the replies are dead on.

EDIT:  Oh yeah wtf do you mean "this shit started for free and should stay that way"  Software was never free.  Information is free, and so far it still is.  Which bring us full circle back to X-S and why discussion of piracy is a no-no.

Well i think the point he was making at first is why people seem to be afraid of talking about it, afterall, talking about it and doing it are totally differant things and there should be no great harm in talking about it.

All seemed fine untill he said about hosting pirated games, thats why most people kicked off about it and the children began their slanging match.

How can someone cost companys millions of dollars with piracy?  Do you think I would have spent millions on the complete Mame, SNES, NES and Genesis sets, along with Visual Studio 6, .net and the new 2003 .net DVD?  Do you think I would have bought autocad, Return to Castle Wolfenstien (PC)?  No.  I bought the games I like, and the cds I like. I payed for GTA II, Age of Empires I and II and Diablo II.  I own the SOAD and Rancid and Korn CDs.  I don't really think my 2000 mp3 collection has cost them ANYTHING, because I would NEVER have bought the cds anyway.

I am positive it is a good rule to not talk about piracy on here, but it can get annoying sometimes when talking about homebrew stuff, because it must be built with XDK.

Your lack of logic is astounding.  Take what you have just said, and multiply it by the thousands of other people who have done exactly the same thing.  It really adds up.  Now take those same thousands, and assume that they had all legally purchased everything they own, and look at the revenue that the developers and others would have gotten.

Now imagine that your job is a developer as the one who developed all of the games you own as ROMS.

I'm not bashing you for what you do, just trying to show you how the losses add up.  They can add up big time.

Please, they dont even notice the losses, its all estimated,  they just want to line their pockets even more. You wouldnt believe all the people ive talked to online about chipping xboxs, the common responce is "what? You can do that on an xbox? Cool!". Hell, i didnt even know about this myself, i found out by accident while i was searching for gaming review sites. The majority of people dont know about this kind of thing, the developers make plenty of money. They just bitch because they want more, and if they were truely not making enough money, they wouldnt continue to do it.

QUOTE (jasaiyajin @ May 29 2003, 06:31 PM)
The unauthorized use or reproduction of copyrighted or patented material. muhaha.gif

Is this what this original post is about?

If someone stole a game(recently, I've had a couple stolen), let's say, from me, but I have no idea evidence to back me up. What do I do? It's been a few months since I have purchased them, so can I call the companies and request they send me new copies? My options seem limited, so I have to either find out who is the little thief or have backups ready just in case such incidents occur. It is human nature to steal, a difficult nature to battle. If people in high places decide, make rules, and govern our lives, then can they not make some mistake in judgement based upon unfair reasoning?

The point is, people do not realize a lot of things, but they are aware of their own financial situations. I have met a vast amount of varied people, so no real conclusion on all of man can be made. Therefore, an endless array of arguments can be made about piracy, its limits, morals, and law. Just remember, money rules this world's superficial state, contributing to the superficial greed of the wealthy and powerful few.

My view on piracy lies in its innate demonization, the view of people who are pirates as evil doers. I have seen companies bend copyright laws to their own needs, such as Disney, to continue profitting from their only source of revenue. Who are the real demons in this game and who are the legitimate copyright owners?

The question is: Can I pirate a game I had stolen if there appears no way to get it back? I wish to avoid paying another $55 (US) dollars for any single game, since I already lost over $300 in games.  I've gone to the police, but they gave information that did not suffice - they're unable to do anything.

I don't want sympathy or anything useless like that, just some honest opinions from anyone(flamers, haters, newbie welcome)!!!

If that were the case, I would consider it copyright infringement, but not ethically wrong.  Our rules here would stand, of course.  If you were having trouble getting the pirated copy to work properly and were going to be asking for help, you should get used to posting a synopsis of your situation in every potential thread.  It would be imprudent to presumptuously post, "Can anyone help me get my Epsylon release of ETM working?"  That's a future denizen of the Garbage Bin, in my eyes.

its not working for free......... They are well aware of loss due to piracy and have already cut their monitary loses before the game (or software) even hits the shelves.  No one is losing here except for the people that have so much they dont even notice.  Do I even have to bring up the whole Metallica vs napster trial??  I am a 21 year old man with my cgi,MCSE,MCP,MCDBA that works 40 + hours as a network consultant/programmer so I know a little bit about the game.   +no one goes without getting paid.... this is america (everyone is on welfare)
