Some members have kids
Some people scratch DVDs
Some people like to keep a backup so that if somethign does go wrong they save cash
Some people just use backups so that they keep originals in perfect condition to maintain their value

I modded my box because:

1)I own 20 XBOX games (originals). I backed up all of them to my HDD, because I'm to lazy to get up and swap the DVD each time and because I have a 2 year old who loves to use DVD as Frisbees)
2)I have some import (legaly acquired ) games
3)because I backed up my cd collection on my PC (100 meters away) and want to share it to my box so I can play them on my surround system in my living room.

Now tell my what is illegal about this.

And before you go on bitching around (again), answer this simple question: Did you ever download an MP3 or game. Did you ever record on tape some music from the radio? Did you ever tape a movie from television? Did you ever copy something out of a book?

If you answer any of these questions with yes, you probaly are a PIRATE

PS Dreamcast did not die because of piracy, and it is possible to copy Nintendo discs (although they won't work, because of no modchip)

The main reason why I modded my XBOX is not Pirating, but the ability to play MP3.

I wanted an XBOX from day 1, because of the quality of the console, but I waited untill it was moddable and XBMP came out, before I actually bought it.

I have bought 20 games, recently Toca Race Driver, Because I thought they where good enough to buy and wanted to support those companies.

I will admit to you, that alot of people probably have only modded their game computers for playing illegal copies and that not every one owns as many legal games as I do.

I just hope you will admit to that there are people around who modded there boxes for non Piracy reasons.

If Microdoft was smart enough, they would look at the scene and release some of the fine things as official add-ons (hint hint). If they would, I would be the first to buy it. It is my believe however that MS is not gonna do this until XBOX2 because of the current hardware limitations. If they play it right they could make a wonderful entertainment center.

oh yeah and mp3's are oh so legal as well as divx movies they sell them in a  good music shops like HMV and on amazon.com as well but did you buy the xbox mainly to wait and get it chipped or did you buy the xbox for the fact that you wanted the hard drive for purposes which were'nt intended by M$? the reason why they don't allow such things as mod chips is because companies like sony and MS are just protecting their investment the xbox itself came from a team of designers made my MS no from MS themselves as did the playstation 2 and what LEGAL things can be had from mod-chipping a console lets see ummm...

nope can't see any there there was a rule once which said you could make 1 copy of the game for backup purposes but that was when games were on floppy disk what hardware limitations are there for running mp3 discs or divX movies?
what and you can't play your mp3s on your computer or with an mp3 player or with an in car cd player that can read mp3 discs or with a stand alone DVD player that can read mp3 discs or with the xbox that can read music CD's and DVD movies
And   Potenza no i have never done any of the things you have mentioned if i downloaded an mp3 i buy the CD and support the artists but none of you do you just download everything from your music to your movies.

I tried to be nice, not to flame in my last post. And still I get an agressive reply.
There is nothing illegal about MP3 as such. As I told you before I converted my whole CD collection (+200) to PC. I don't use Kazaa or any such program for my music. I buy it.

Secondly I do not have an MP3 player. But I do have an XBOX with which I can, over a network, access my PC. And no I don't want my PC in the living room.

I have bought over 20 games now (just added one more yesterday), so don't tell me I'm not supporting software companies.

And now you are telling me you never recorded (or whatched a recorded) video from Television? SO I guess you don't have a VCR?
ALso you never copied a page out of a book: this probably means you never went to college.

I bought the box, because of what the scene made of it, if not I would have gotten PS2 (Which I wouldn't chip BTW)

I had the box for 5 months, before I decided to mod it.

You can write what you want, but some of us do support MS and Gamecreators.

And we will see in the future if XBOX turns out to be a Mulimedia platform.

Feck, are you really a person who has never ever copied anything? Never recorded some music from the radio? Recorded a movie from TV, because you wanted to watch it later....

Anyway, as you can make up out of my prior posts, I'm willing to pay for games. But to be honest what really bothers me is that I have to pay for a whole distribution system as well.
And for CD's, you pay for, let us say 15 songs, of which you actually only like 2 or 3. They should find a solution for this....
