So I filled my 500 gb on the xbox and now I want more space.  So I was thinking of picking up some cheap desktop from goodwill and creating a server to store new stuff and I had some questions.

1) What speed CPU and how much RAM should I get?  I figure the requirements for this should be fairly low.
2) What OS to install?  I think linux is the way to go, but I have zero experience with it.  My biggest priority would be bootup speed with seconday being about of HD space it takes.  If I were to do Linux, are there some instructions out there that I can follow to do what I need?

Any advice is appreciated.
