Diagnose My Xbox Fault Please.
« on: January 20, 2010, 07:55:00 AM »

Successfully sorted my other xbox but would like help with this one which is currently put aside and not doing anything. Its a 1.4 xbox and only turns on with the eject button and then turns off 30 seconds later. Sometimes the power button can be used to turn off the system prematurely to the 30 seconds but its random. I have a psu which only works on this motherboard. I tried it with a 1.6 motherboard and it won't switch on at all. I've tried a known good psu with this motherboard and it won't switch on. Strange. If you insert a game into the dvd drive it will load and probably run for longer than 30 seconds sometimes the xbox won't switch off at all as long as you boot a commercial game directly.

Any ideas. I'm guessing there is some sort of stability issue, maybe a capacitor somewhere. Seems to be hard drive access is more likely to crash the xbox and get it to switch off.

well the 1.4 psu doesnt work in the 1.6 because they use different voltages, if the known good psu that wont turn on the 1.4 is from the 1.6 that explains that one as well, and quit possibly this could have damaged both boards by doing this

the rest of it sounds like a short in the front panel, try swapping the one from the 1.6 to the 1.4 (that much is the same) and see if fixes it

I have tried a different front panel already with the same symptoms exactly. Regarding the psu.....crap! I must stop assuming xbox parts are compatible between different revisions. Both psu's are still working fine I think. If its not the front panel what else can it be?

Cheers, I've now sorted that xbox as well now. also adjusted the laser power as the drive was a bit iffy. All fully working so far. I had two outer traces that were visually corroded. So was the inner most one too but that didn't look like all the way through and its working so hopefully will last.

Brilliant!
