Best Sata To Ide Adapter
« Reply #30 on: September 22, 2010, 08:23:00 AM »

Just wanted to confirm that this is possible. I want to put a 2t sata hardrive in my xbox, currently has a 500g  seagate ide, that has worked flawlessly for 2yrs. Does the version of xbox matter? Want about the bios? Also I want to do this on a softmodded xbox. And if reliantkcar or anyone else can shed some light on what he/she meant by newer type of ide cable needed for adapter http://www.cooldrive...hadradtoid.html. Did want to mention that I did have to alter bios on my xbox, so not even sure how this is done or if it can be done on softmod.  Thanks for any help

http://www.pcguide.c...onfCable-c.html
http://www.pcguide.c...fCable80-c.html

Describes and shows pics of differences in cables. As for the hardware version/bios, I believe it can be done with ANY hw version. You have the stock bios on your xbox now? (never TSOP flashed it=stock bios on XBOX)
If not, you need it (someone correct me if im wrong) as NKPATCHER requires a stock bios to properly function
If thats the case the NDURE 3.1/XBHDM softmod has a built-in-on-the-fly bios modification program called NKPATCHER (search for both of those terms in the forums and you'll get a better idea of what is possible with said tools.
If not, you need it (someone correct me if im wrong) as NKPATCHER requires a stock bios to properly function.

Theres better guides around, but the short answer is:
Read all the way to the end of this post before you do anything else.
Get the Ndure3.1 / XBHDM 1.9 files from usual places
Get the EEPROM.BIN file off your current drive (backup eeprom if you havent already and FTP in to get it)
Get the STOCK C drive files from Slayers CD (or wherever you can)
Get XBPARTITIONER v1.0 and XBPARTITIONER v1.1 (yes both)

unpack XBOXHDM to an easy to find folder (desktop?) should give you a folder called XBOXHDM there.
place Stock C drive files (from slayers or wherever)in Linux/c (in xboxhdm)
place eeprom.bin in linux/eeprom folder(in xboxhdm)

run ndure3.1 (MAKE SURE YOU CONFIG CORRECTLY *OUTSIDE SCOPE OF THIS QUICKIE)and have it put output files in /linux/ndure folder (in xboxhdm)
**(personally I prefer XBMC so I replaced the linux/e/dash/default.xbe with xbmc's files before next step)

*run make-iso-win.bat (in XBOXHDM)  *for WINDOWS. I'm assuming if you're running a linux OS you can figure it out on your own?

burn created linux.iso to cd using your image burning software of choice (free n easy = imgburn)

attach NEW drive to computer with IDE cable and adapter (see 2 posts back for what worked for me. YMMV) DISCONNECT ALL OTHER HDs from computer. Set jumper to master (for  adapter I used=jumper on) on primary IDE slot and cd\dvd on secondary IDE slot

Set computer bios to boot from CD. boot to lunux distro you burned to cd earlier

run xboxhdm , build new drive from scratch, (it should pull the files from the 'C' folder on the cd) after drive built, quit tool to command prompt, type xbrowser look in ndure folder for ndure script and doubleclick it.

apply ndure softmod files

reboot from same cd and run linux tools for locking and unlocking

lockhd -a
(this will lock drive using eeprom.bin file from earlier that is on your CD)

shut it all down and plug drive into your xbox

should boot to your dash after that. Once you have FTP, copy over xbpartitioner 1.0 and 1.1

for a 2tb drive this may work out different than it did for my drive (1.5) but basically, run 1.0 and create f and g partitions, reboot (not sure that reboot is necessary but thats how i did it)
run 1.1 format again WITH DIFFERENT PARTITION SIZES to get 64k clusters (or face data loss errors later when drive is over 500gb full)

FILL HER UP

(now if that is too straightforward, you can follow my posts from earlier in this thread, do it exactly as i did, step by step in each of my posts and thereby make it WAY more complicated than it needs to be, if you like...)

or if you have access to a chipped (and maybe tsop'd? ) xbox, an even easier method is outlined in my last post using the ability to boot with a non locked HD and the slayer cd. Just make sure you lock it with the EREPROM from the xbox the drive is going into.

(if you have problems finding any of the software, its all on xbins)

Good luck

I have not messed with my bios, but since it has been so long that I modded this box, can't remember the specifics. The reason I was asking about the cable is that I want to get and sata to pata adapter that works and the one reliantkcar mentioned appears to have worked, but again stated that a new still of cable was used.  If I am correct, the new cable is the one with the blue connections in the pictures. Or is there another adapter that is reliable and does not require a newer style cable?  Also, I thought I needed to copy the C folder off the xbox that the hard drive is being upgraded. But since the only way to do this is after the box has been modded.  So your are saying that I need to get the c folder off an unmodded box or use slayer cd? I didn't do that on my first box. All I did was copy the c folder to my pc after I had softmodded the box.

OK, I think I might have misunderstood you.
Is your current xbox been modded?

Just wanted to add I found ndure 3.1. But this appears to be use to softmod xbox. If it is softmodded would I have to remod or can this even be done? Pretty sure I didn't use ndure 3.1 last time.

OK, as long as your xbox is modded this will work. how/with what tools you modded it last time does not matter as you wont be modding your current drive.  You'll want to FTP all your data off your current drive
Basically all you need is the eeprom.bin file to be able to lock the new drive once its built.

The reason I say use slayers_evox_auto_installer_2.7 for your stock files is:
1 it works
2i have no idea what files are on YOUR c drive and as far as I know you have to have a retail (m$ complete c drive) to get this softmod to work.

So, again, you are building a stock xbox drive (with a couple terabytes extra of course), moddifying it, locking it (all from a computer), then once it boots to evox (or your dash of choice) run xboxpartitioner 1 and then 1.1 WITH DIFFERENT PARTITION SIZES EACH TIME to get the 64kb cluster size. (I forget the exact bug that makes it necessary, maybe 1.1 crashes with unformatted large partition?

Actually the hard part was finding the adapter that willl work with XBOX (well, I ordered the 3 of the deal extreme ones back in may but they never showed.  Bought another off ebay (thanks again @ runn88) that worked for me. YMMV. Ebay seller said it wouldnt work.

There are a few threads around about 'upgrading hd on soft modded xbox"
search and read. maybe read several and all the comments so you get an idea of what the method entails, problems and feedback from those who've done it.  the only thing special about this is the SATA drive (which is irrelevant if we find the 'right' adapter and get a new IDE cable)

The best thing is that as long as you have your other drive (500gb you said?) the worst case scenario is it wont work or you mess something up in which case, you plug in your 500gb while you figure things out....

Also wanted to ask if I wanted to update my current mod to ndure 3.1,how would I do it? Or is it possible to just add files from ndure 3.1 to my current mod and which one would be best to add an where would they be placed?

the deal is with this is 1.1 crashes when it sees a partition larger than 1 tb. so you need to run 1.0 and create 2 partitions that are under 1tb (an f and a g) but 1.0 cant format with 64 bit clusters which you need on partitions over 500 gb. so then you need to open 1.1 and format any partition larger than 500 gb with 64 bit clusters.

what if I wanted to use an external USB enclosure to format the 2tb hard drive drive on my PC to make it a stock xbox hard drive. would this work???

Usb enclosures don't support the ata security commands that are needed to lock the harddisk.
A softmodded xbox will boot into an error screen if the harddisk isn't locked with the correct password. If your xbox isn't a 1.6 model, you could consider a Tsop flash before you install the bigger disk in the xbox. It has most of the advantages of a modchip without the install problems. (Besides jumpering a few links to enable writing of the flash chip.)

You should find an 80 ribbon ata cable in any decent computer store.
They might become absolete in a couple of year as everything is becoming sata instead of ide.

regards.

anyone have a list of lockable 2TB SATA drives? I've bought 3 a samsung, a seagate st32000542as, and a WD green WD20eads and after building I try to lock and get 'ata security spec not supported' under XBOXHDM 1.9 (linux tools).  Trying to build a box on the road at a friends house with a deal extreme adapter... The guys in frys have no idea, and manufacturers seem to have quit listing it in their specs?

Not to forget: hope those in the US had a good turkey day...
Is it possible its the sata/ide adapter? using an 80 (blue tipped) ide cable so its not that... Should I just give up on 2TB and go back to the 1.5 seagate from before?

Its for a buddy who just got out of prison (since 2002) for a failed hacking attempt... well sort of, he was trying to 'hack' the head off a child molester in the neighborhood... I told him he's lucky. Since last year that would be considered a federal 'hate crime' as child molesters are now a 'protected minority' and he'd have gotten a 15 year 'enhancement'...

I know its OT but WTF is up with our lawmakers? Are that many of them cho-mos that they have to make molesting kids protected under hate crime laws?!?!?!?

The seagate serial you mention should be lockable, to memory. It's hard these days to find a modern HDD that isn't. More likely it's the computer you're working with - some motherboard manufacturers block the locking commands, because of the havoc that could potentially be caused with them.

One tip that may work is to turn off the detection of the drive within the CMOS settings screen of the system. XboxHDM should pick it up anyway, and the motherboard will've forgotten to block the commands on that channel.

Another is to try connecting the drive after the computer has completed drive detection, but before XboxHDM starts to load. The "pause" button on your keyboard may help with this (The enter button unpauses the system. Note that Windows ignores the pause button, but we're not using Windows here).

Failing all that? Try a different computer to perform the lock, or better yet, if the console is a pre-1.6 machine, flash the TSOP. That way it won't need a locked drive.

i finally got the sata-ide adapter everyone says is the best http://www.dealextre...ls.dx/sku.12537
I actually got 3 of them.. popped it on, and nothing. got an error 07.. tried all jumper placements, and same thing.. so took another one out cus i was gonna test to see if perhaps i just got a bad one, and the other 2 do not have any jumper pins on them.. only the one.. I tried one anyway, and for a moment i noticed a led light in the back light up, which i never noticed happen with the 1st one which had the pins..
then the light went out, and xbox powered down... im careful to make sure the back of the adapter is covered so nothing touches accidentally, and shorts out..

as i tried it again, same thing error 07 and there are no jumper pins on them.. could that be a problem.. i mean could it force a short or something. I got 2 brand new HDDs here, and checked and as i said in the last thread have been tested.. I changed bios back to xcutioner 4981.67 just in case, still nothing..this is really getting on my nerves. just mail ordering the adapters was hell in of its self. since i live in asia, i had to get some friends to transfer funds, and join this action site which had the adapter.. it came in exact package as one from extreme deals, and same model # too..

I got one more here that i havent opened yet... im so tempted to and tri just because i have been doing this shit for months now... anyone who is using this adapter had any similar experiences, should the led light always be on, and if not, does that mean the adapter has been fried.. ugh.. SUPER frustrated !!!! but i would really appreciate any and all input asap !

posted this in another topic. maybe it wasnt the ideal place for it.. sorry..

Error 07

HDD time out

The hard drive is incorrectly connected, or faulty. In many cases reseating the IDE cable is enough to fix the problem.

Faulty DVD drives have been known to cause this error (as they share the IDE cable with the HDD), and in some more serious cases the issue may lay with the Xbox motherboard.

You may also see an 07 if your power supply unit is failing (and hence unable to activate the drive). To test whether the PSU is at fault, connect an external source of power to the drive (for example, the PSU of a standard PC), then power up the console. If it boots correctly this way, then odds are the console's power supply unit needs replacing.

Another way to test whether the drive itself is at fault is by connecting a different one that you know to be functional. If you don't get an error 07/08/09 with that (for example, the console boots or gives a different error code), likely the original drive has given up the ghost.

try unplugging the DVD rom (gotta set the bios to allow this. never done it. maybe someone else could help with that). or any of the other mentioned causes.

The last HDD i bought off newegg was faulty. had to send it back and got a new one. and this one works great. it does happen is all I'm saying.

also if you hook up the ide adapter without the drive attached what happens? there should be a little green light (or red if something is wrong like the drive not being attached) on the adapter.

i like to put a piece of electrical tape on the HDD where the adapter could potentially touch the HDD. this has happened to me b4 and shorted and shutdown my comp and destroyed my HDD and adapter. be careful of this!
