The best way is probably to use some other Xbox to retrieve the files. Find a modded Xbox, make sure the HD you're using is unlocked, and fit it into the other Xbox. FTP the files over and you should be good.

It is highly unadvisable to use an Xbox as a storage device unless you specifically installed NAS software on it and is not running the MS BIOS.

Stick the HDD back in the console and power it up. What does the system do? Does it give video/audio output? Work normally? Go to an error screen? What?

Ok, so the HDD is locked.

It sounds like your best bet is to redo all the joins between the modchip and your motherboard with a soldering iron. Just reheat each one and let them set again. If physically bumping the console used to fix it, then odds are there's just a loose connection somewhere (that's probably gotten worse over time due to sparks).

Failing that, you'll need to either hotswap the drive into a PC (in which case you'll be using Xplorer360 to read the files, check my sig), or use an EEPROM backup to deal with the lock (you should know it if you have one).

connected it to laptop via usb, it says cannot find fatx drive, does that mean it's locked?

Ok so opened up my box, the xecuter chip lights up blue (not the one at the front of the xbox, but the one actually attached to teh chip).

I moved the pin header a bit and the ground connection, but no luck, so I'm guessing it's one of the bottom of the motherboard.

Before I attempt this and potentially destroy the motherboard, let me try hotswapping.

So basically, I connect the hard drive to the xbox, via its ide cable, pull out the ide connection at the back of the dvd drive so only the hard drive is connected and boot the console.

Then I connect the pc to the hard drive while it's still running off the xbox power supply? Should xplorer360 work then?

One more thing, can I use a usb enclosure for the hotswap? Connect the IDE cable used with the enclosure and connect the enclosure to the computer?

Thanks

You quoted me telling you the drive was locked, in order to ask if the drive was locked?  huh.gif

Anyway, yeah, that's one way of doing the swap. In that particular case, you want to first remove the IDE cable just as the X-Box's front LED first turns red. I'm uncertain whether the USB enclosure will work, but I can't see any reason why it shouldn't.

after many attempts, and finally trying another usb enclosure it finally worked. At times, xplorer360 crashed after clicking the option to load hard drive, which was annoying.

Transfering the files now. thanks

Afterwards, will try resolder the points on the motherboard
