well i ruled out the drive board
i put a borrowed laser in it and it worked fine
so do you think the diode would light when extra voltage is applied? (remember it doesnt light up blue or red in the ps3)

well i kinda ruled out the diode
i fit a violet diode from a 410a (3 pin) in the 400a (5 pin) housing
this time i used a clear disc to check the laser light (didnt do that before)
and it lit up violet barely
so my transplant apparently worked it but something on the laser assembly that is limiting the current to the diode?
i will replace the original diode later and use the clear disc to make sure that is barely lighting too
if so im sure its one of the ICs on the laser assembly (can you buy those?)

i can't comment on the IC thing other than just suggest buying a broken drive a salvage from that...
but i wanted to thank you for putting up details of what your doing inorder to solve the issue.  keep up the good work
