Dead Disc Drive?
« on: October 08, 2009, 06:22:00 AM »

Hey I just picked up a Ps3 that wouldn't turn on. Fixed it with a hard rest. Powers on works fine except my disc drive wont even try to take a disc or eject. Like its completely dead. I have taken it apart. The drive has the old 400a laser in it with the board exposed on the bottom of the board. I have taken the drive apart there's nothing wrong as far as I can see, I can even get the blue light to start blinking by messing with the little switches on the board on the inside.. I wanted to know if I swapped the the board into a new drive of the same type if that would fix it. I also heard that the foil ribbon cable could be the culprit, could the cable cause this issue? Thanks. Also what if my board is fried?

PS: Also this console had been opened before I got it. Also no parts in the drive move, click or buzz, absolutely nothing, the laser doesn't move or light up. Spindle never spins.

It could be. I had one that did the same thing. That ribbon cable isn't fun to get in right. Also it may need a drive alignment done.. try checking it out on youtube. Its a bit touchy to do but when ya get it.. it was all worth it. That being said if it's been opened it may be someone swapped out the drive.. the drives are paired with the mobo so for now you'd be screwed. Though I'd bet its thats ribbon cable.

Best of luck
