Not Reading Any Disc's
« on: October 13, 2008, 01:54:00 PM »

I got a 40gig PS3 with a manufacture date of november 07.It doesn't read any disc's I put in it cd,ps1,xbox,dreamcast,ps3,blu-ray,dvd. nothing...

So I opened it up and I turned the cover from the drive over and put a ps1 game over the sensor and I put a clear cd (you know the ones at the top of a blank cd pack) on with the magnetic grabber. and I reset it like 10 times and every time you'd see the lens adjust up and down but no light from the laser at all.

And on the menu when you put a disc in you just see the little swirly thing at the very top right of the screen and whenever a disc is in there it doesn't go away. I copied some divx movies off my xbox onto the ps3 and I watched a whole movie and the little loading thing never dissapeared. So I'm pretty sure it doesn't have a overheating problem.

My question is. Will changing the laser fix this or is there a possibility of it not workin? and also where is a good place to get a laser? I've bought lasers off ebay for ps2 before and they don't work. any thoughts...

I have the exact same problem and did the exact same thing you just did.  I'm trying to find confirmation that it is the laser as well.  I know the best place it seems to get lasers is from ebay at the moment.

Can anyone confirm that the laser does in fact light up before the disc starts spinning?  If it should, then i'm confident it is the laser that is bad.

THERE is a very quick and ez test to check for laser function....

All one has to do is 1) partly dissassemble drive....top half metal cover off with access to magnet circle.
2)with the ps3 off, disconnect the ribbon cable from the mainboard, but keep the grey/black power cable connected on the left hand side. 3)remove the magnet top so you can peek inside the drive then turn on the ps3 4) the laser lens should move back a cm or two and "head bop" 3 times with the blue light on!!!..thats it!!. There should be a bright blue light
If it doesnt light at all or if it lights a dim blue then the laser is bad.

Excellent!  My drive does the dance and goes up and down, but no blue light at all comes on.

Thanks, now I have more confidence it is actually the laser!

Hi there, thought i would borrow the thread instead of creating a new one, hoping for some luck. Now i have the same problem as many of you, the ps3 wont read any bd, dvd, bd games etc. So i just thought, fuck it, but the other day i went and bought a ps3 laser replacement (pic 2) and i noticed something, the little clip (pic 1) is gone, the guy i bought it from said all his replacement lasers looked like that, so my question is, is that how they are supposed to be? Because i tried to take the one from my original one off, and some ic points broke, so now im HAVE to get a replacement laser, just  need one that i can lock the flat cable on smile.gif

Also, how do i see if mine is a 400AAA or A or whatever, because the original drive, if you look on the right bottom side, doesnt have this model number, it only has those serial numbers that are incomplete on the photo.

Any tips? Thanks in advance smile.gif
