check it on ebay, new lasers are usually cost 20-100$.but those lasers die really fast if you play 7-15 hours a day.

"NEW" only means new to you. All the lasers and drives are from China and they could be new or refurbished. No way to know until it arrives, and then it might only look new. I have ordered over 15 from china, and had only 1 fail within 3 months. They others have been in use for as long as 8 months.

PS3 laser fail all the time in systems that were bought new within the last year.

In which case send the PS3 back to Sony under warranty.
No point paying for a replacement if you don't need to.

If yours is out of warranty then you can't just replace the drive. The drive key will not match so it won't work in your PS3.
Laser on it's own may be no good if you have a problem with the drive other than disc read errors.

It would most likely be the KES-410ACA laser that you would require. These fitted the 40gb models so I would imagine that Sony would have included them on the 80GB as they ahave a twin lens compared with the KES-400AAA's 1.

But, it is best to open up and check beforehand.

replaced a drive on the older 80GB model (card reader and 4 USB ports) and it needed the 400AAA lens/deck.

best way is to open it up and check the tray yourself.

I have another ps3 with a laser problem, both of them are 40 G models, they both have the 400AAA type lens, when I took both apart and tested them, I can see the lens move up and down, but the motor that spins the disk, does not spin at all, cause I would think the disk should still spin but wont be able to read the disk, will replacing the lens will get everything working fine again? both the ps3 still need new lasers

OK,
I know others have asked this before, I have many cd drives, dvd, game consoles etc in the past.
In every drive I know the sequence is
1) switch on laser and achieve focus
2) spin disk
3) read table of contents (TOC)

If focus is not acieved then the disk will not spin!
The laser may light but may not be working properly or the optics may be damaged.

I had a PS3 which lit the laser and attempted to focus as you mention, it was the laser. changed it and all was well.
Cheers,
Andrew
